Canada’s Most Patriotic Village

In 1942, the Toronto Star published a front-page article, “Arthur Village Gives Sons and Money to Aid the War.”It recognized Arthur, Ontario, as the Most Patriotic Village in Canada. One out of every seven Arthur residents fought in the Second World War. It was the highest ratio compared to villages of comparable sizes in Canada.

In 2002, Arthur received this recognition after David Tilson, the M.P.P. for Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey, stated in the Ontario Legislature of Arthur’s extraordinary effort in World War II.

The sacrifice of these soldiers is honoured by the Cenotaph of Arthur, located in the heart of Arthur.

Murals of Arthur

The Pioneer Mural was the first of several murals commissioned by the Arthur Mural Committee. It was designed and painted by the late artist Allen C. Hilgendorf in 2010.

This large mural shows the challenges Augustus Jones and his survey party of First Nations people faced as they pushed north from Burlington, reaching the banks of the Conestoga River near the present-day village of Arthur, on October 17, 1792.

Silver Fox Distillery

Silver Fox Distillery is owned by Mark and Lisa Townsend and began operations in 2020. Due to the time he spent at Cape Breton, Mark had a basic knowledge of distilleries worked which helped set the distillery up for the couple.

The distillery name was picked to represent nature and the couple. Thus began their journey of turning a campfire idea for a distillery into one of Ontario’s larger craft distilleries. Despite the eventual success, the distillery had a rough start because as soon as they started operating, the Covid-19 pandemic hit and forced them to turn their 5000L of whiskey into sanitizer to be donated.

Thankfully, they were able to come out of it and create award-winning beverages such as White Lightning which has corn, oats, and white mixed with 100-proof spirit.

York Soaring Association

York Soaring is Canada’s largest and most active gliding club. The association hosts regular barbecues and fundraising dinners, as well as mentoring cross-country flying.

There is an active runway at York where gliders and power aircrafts fly circuits on opposite sides, but gliders are given right of way during take-off and landing.

Rivers Edge Goat Diary

The farm offers customers locally sourced-goat milk and, on occasion, sheep and cow milk. Although they are not a huge farm with thousands of goats, they can produce high-quality milk to satisfy their customers. Having only a few dozen goats also allows them to keep their carbon footprint low by not using big tractors. This leads to reduced diesel used per year and a much smaller carbon footprint compared to larger farms.

Rivers Edge Goat Diary also plants 1000 trees a year to help combat deforestation and the climate change crisis. For customers, they offer a variety of cheese, meats, eggs, soaps, lotions, and more for purchase.
