Pachena Bay

Pachena Bay is nestled in an old-growth rainforest and expands onto the vast white sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean. It neighbours the First Nations village of Huu-Ay-Aht.

Pachena Bay is at the head of the world-famous West Coast Trail, which spans 75km along the southwest coast of Vancouver Island. Shorter day hikes include Cape Beale Headlands, Keecha Beach and Kicha Lake.

For longer stays, tourists can stay at the Pachena Bay Campground near the Pachena River. Campers can rent a kayak and paddle through Pachena Bay, Seabird Islands and Clutus Point. See the sunken wrecks of the ‘Graveyards of the Pacific’ while scuba diving, or rent a boat and try your luck at sports fishing. Spend a day relaxing on the white sandy beaches or marvel at the bald eagles, sea lions, otters, porpoises, seals, grey whales and orcas while aboard a day cruise.

Brady’s Beach

Brady’s Beach is located on the west side of Bamfield and has no paved road leading to it!

To get to Brady’s Beach, you can hike a few days along the West Coast Trail or take a rough 90 km drive from Port Alberni along a barren gravel road occupied by nothing but logging trucks. You can also take a boat or float plane from Ucluelet to Bamfield or accompany a freighter as it makes several stops to deliver freight through an 800km route through the Broken Islands. Another option is to take a five-minute water taxi if you find yourself on the east side of Bamfield. From there, it is a short, 40-minute hike along a well-marked gravel road to reach the island.

Brady’s beach features spectacular views, a picturesque boardwalk, massive rock stacks, diverse foliage and a blowhole that can spout 20 feet of waves into the air.

Cape Beale Lighthouse

This heritage lighthouse was established by the Canadian Government in 1874. It was the first lighthouse founded on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and served to provide coastal light to reduce the rising death toll of mariners and shipwrecks on what was then known as the Graveyard of the Pacific. Throughout history, Cape Beale Lighthouse has played an important role in ensuring safe passage to ports, guiding large volumes of commercial traffic, supporting the growing logging industry, as a staging ground for large-scale rescues, meeting place for environmental groups, mariners, hikers, to monitor security and more!

Cape Beale Lighthouse sits 167 feet above the Pacific ocean. To reach the lighthouse, hikers can begin at Talapltos Trail in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and trek 7km past Tapaltos Beach.

Bamfield Coast Guard Station

A lifeboat station was originally established in Pachena Bay in the early 1900s in an effort to reduce the lives lost on the ‘Graveyard of the Pacific.’ The lifeboat station was eventually moved to Bamfield  Inlet in 1908 and was used by the Bamfield Creek Lifeboat Assistance Crew for two years before it was wrecked and rebuilt in 1909.

Since its retirement in 1969, the Bamfield Lifeboat has been displayed at the Maritime Heritage Centre in Port Alberni. Cape McKay lifeboat took its place and resided at the Bamfield Coast Guard Station. Cape McKay is one of 36 cape-class lifeboats of the Canadian Coast Guard fleet.
