Home of the Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron is another prominent figure in local lore. The elegant, long-legged bird, often spotted along the shores of local lakes, is the Town’s official mascot. A bird statue is situated at the corner of 50 Street and 49 Street, next to the Community Gazebo that marks the Town centre and miniatures of the bird adorn the street posts.

The Blue Heron, also known as “Aaron the Blue Heron,” was built in 1984 by its creator, Trygve Seland. It is constructed of rebar, wire mesh and concrete and is 8 feet (2.4 metres) in height and is situated on a pedestal that is 4 feet (1.2 metres) in height.

Barrhead Street Festival

June

If you’re looking for a fun-filled day, come check out Barrhead’s Street Festival. There, you’ll be able to find group dancing, live local music, and more performances from talented artists from the area. Or why not sit down and enjoy the food and drinks served at the beer gardens while taking in the festivities around you?

And for families, they offer activities that are great for both kids and adults. These include face painting, firefighting games, scavenger hunts, and eating contests. So, if you want to spend a day outside and get a sense of the community, then the Barrhead Street Festival is the perfect place to check out.

Klondyke Ferry

The Klondike (Vega) Ferry on the Athabasca River is one of only seven remaining ferries in the Province of Alberta.

The ferry operates from April to October. An ice bridge serves the crossing during the winter months.

Nature Alive

Nature Alive offers various outdoor trips, workshops, courses, and more. One of the services they offer is survival courses. In these courses, you’ll learn how to set traps for catching animals, prepare animals you caught, make warm gear, and more. If you’re planning on booking one of these courses, look at the gear you’re required to bring yourself to prepare for it.

 

 

Another service offered is canoe trips. There are various trips to choose from, each offering a unique adventure. For those dedicated to canoeing, they offer a 2.5-day trip on the Athabasca River, which moves through calm waters and beginner-friendly rapids. Or, for a very scenic trip, you can choose the sunset trip on Thunder Lake, which will give you a fantastic view of the clear night sky. So, whatever your wants and needs, there’ll be an adventure for you at Nature Alive.

De Herdt Gardens

The De Herdt Gardens combines two very relaxing settings into one place. The building has an extensive greenhouse in it, full of beautiful plants and flowers, and a café specializing in Belgian Pastries. In the greenhouse, you’ll find everything from fresh vegetables to colourful spring flowers, all of which create a beautiful and natural environment to explore.

And on the café side of things, you’ll be able to get freshly made food and drinks that are incredible when paired with the greenhouse. For food, they have a variety of baked goods, both sweet and savoury. And for drinks, you’ll be able to get specialty coffees that have lovely floral foam art designs.

Come for the greenhouse, stay for the café, and make sure you visit the De Herdt Gardens on your trip through Barrhead.

Willowbend Resort

If you’re looking for a place to stay and don’t mind being a short drive out of town, then the lakeside Willowbend Resort is a great place to check out. This campground is great for long-term campers looking for a place to stay the whole season. It is located right by Lac la Nonne and has everything you’d need to have a great stay.

The Lake is an excellent spot for boating and fishing, and the resort includes a boat storage area if you plan on bringing a boat. Quad trails are also found around the area for you to explore. On top of that, the lake is a great spot for bird watching, so pack binoculars for your stay.

Barrhead Grain Elevators

Barrhead’s grain elevators which some might refer to as prairie cathedrals are historical buildings and a visual symbol of Western Canada.

Barry’s Ultra Motorsports Park

A bit more of an extreme adventure located near Barrhead is Barry’s Ultra Motorsports Park. This park features five different dirt bike tracks and off-road trails for you to explore. The dirt bike tracks differ in length and skill level, so be sure to check which one will best fit your requirements. And for the off-road trails, they have both bike and quad-friendly trails available.

Want to join in on the action but don’t have any experience riding dirt bikes? Then no problem, because the park offers lessons geared for both kids and adults about the basics of dirt bike riding. For these lessons, bikes and safety equipment are provided, so don’t worry about needing to provide them yourself.

So, whether you’re an experienced rider or this is your first time riding a dirt bike, there’s an experience for everyone at Barry’s Ultra Motorsports Park.

Blue Heron Fair

August

Another annual festival put on in Barrhead is the Blue Heron Fair. This fair features a weekend packed with fun events and activities. Some activities you’re likely to find at the festival include live music, a parade, a rodeo, a motocross show, and much more.

On top of these events, you’ll also be able to find some typical fair activities. These include face painting, bouncy castles and obstacle courses, and fair food as a BBQ cookoff. So, if this sounds like a great way to spend a weekend, make sure you plan your visit during the fair so you can partake in all the fun.

Thunder Lake Provincial Park

Just 20 km west of Barrhead, you’ll be able to find Thunder Lake Provincial Park. This park is right on the coast of the beautiful Thunder Lake and features multiple trails and seating areas that will allow you to take in the scenery. The lake is also an excellent spot for kayaking or canoeing if you’re a fan of being out on the water.

A campsite is also available in the park for both RVs and tents. They provide powered or unserviced sites and every amenity you’ll need to have a safe and comfortable stay. Playgrounds can also be found close to the campsites if you bring kids.

Barrhead Centennial Museum

The Barrhead Centennial Museum is a great place for anyone looking to learn about the town’s history and what life used to look like. The museum has collections of artifacts from key events from the town’s history, such as the arrival of the railway, as well as many items that would have been used in everyday life.

 

Furthermore, the museum has an archive of the local newspaper dating back to 1928, old photographs, various government records that had been used, and much more. Everyone is welcome to look through these documents and the history of Barrhead. And if you still want to learn more about Barrhead’s history after looking through the archives, the gift shop sells books containing the town’s history for anyone interested.
