Maison LePailleur

This historical museum is located near the Chateauguay River and was built in 1792. It is a monument of heritage that tells the tale of the French-Canadian bourgeoisie and many historical figures that held importance in Châteaguay. It offers a variety of expositions and activities year-long, with occasional cultural programs.

Since 1998, Maison LePailleur has become the main head office for the Musée du Grand Châteauguay (SMGC). They have provided many historical narratives to teach locals and tourists about important figures of the region. One such example would be their narrative on the life of Anna Laberge, a prominent woman who cared for many sick people in her time and whose name was given to the hospital in Châteauguay.

Église Saint Joachim

This traditional and historic church was built between 1774 and 1797, inspired by neo-baroque architecture. The interior decor was created by Philippe Liébert, including a painting of Saint Joachim himself. Between 1780 and 1892, about 13 people were buried under the church floor.

Some minor renovations were conducted on the church in 1894 after British troops damaged it. It has been considered heritage and historical monument since 1955. Stopping by the church grounds is an excellent addition to any travel plans to taste the area’s history!

Joseph started playing violin at the young age of 9 and would help his father with fishing duties. He went to the United States to develop his playing style and became known as The Prince of Fiddlers.

Joseph Allard participated in various competitions around Canada and the United States, winning many of them over the years. He represented Canada in a worldwide competition in Maine (1926) with five other fiddlers and won second place.

Joseph Allard died in his hometown of Chateauguay in 1947 and was buried in Saint Joachim cemetery without a tombstone.
