Big Bruce

Say hi to Big Bruce, the giant Hereford bull statue standing in front of the Arran-Elderslie headquarters in Chesley since 1980.

Quite the celebrity, Bruce contested Kenora’s Huskie the Muskie, Niagara’s Floral Clock, Colborne’s Big Apple, Perth’s Mammoth Cheese, and 11 other Ontario must-sees on TVO’s Great Ontario Roadside Attraction Showdown. He won the title in August of 2021.

Chesley Heritage Trail

This 4 km linear trail follows the North Saugeen River and old rail line through the Village of Chesley, connecting walkers to important heritage sites. Located along the trail are artifacts from a retired sawmill and factory, as well as informative plaques that detail the history of those objects. Two bridges on the trail provide great views of the river below.

Trail access can be found via the main street at Riverside Park, from Krug Park on 2nd Street SW and 4th Street SW.

Home Town of Mickey MacKay

Duncan McMillan “Mickey” MacKay played primarily in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and Western Canada Hockey League for the Vancouver Millionaires.

Duncan “Mickey” MacKay was born in Chesley and grew up on the family farm in Bruce County, near Chesley. He joined the Canadian Army at the age of 14.

MacKay learned to skate at the age of 15 and spent two seasons playing senior hockey in Chesley.

He won the Stanley Cup twice during his career.

Home Town of The Little Giant of Hanover

Tommy Burns, born Noah Brusso, nicknamed “The Little Giant of Hanover,” is the only Canadian-born World Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

Noah Brusso was born in Cheskey in 1881 in a German-Canadian family. His family lived in several locations around Ontario’s Grey and Bruce counties. Five of Noah’s siblings died before reaching adulthood.

In 1900 Brusso began his prizefighting career in Detroit, Michigan. He took up professional boxing under the name of Tommy Burns and, although standing only 170 cm and rarely heavier than 77 kg, was a leading heavyweight.

St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church

Constructed in 1883, the St. Michael’s Church served members of Brant Township until its closure in 1952. In the early 1990s, a fire (suspected incendiary) destroyed all but the bell tower. It was never rebuilt.

You can view its ruins on a peaceful dirt road just minutes outside Chesley, Ontario.

Home Town of Lights

Lights (born Valerie Anne Poxleitner) is a Juno Award-winning singer and songwriter.

Valerie Anne Poxleitner spent her childhood in many parts of the world. She lived in the Philippines and Jamaica during her elementary school years. In 1997 the family moved back to Canada, and nine-year-old Lights immediately got her hands on a guitar.

She studied at Chesley High School.
