RĂ©sidence George-Knight-Nesbitt

The Eastern Townships saw the construction of a number of fine high-style Second Empire residences during the 1870s and 1880s. Originally called the Lismore House, it was built for Cowansville mill-owner George K. Nesbitt and is its most outstanding surviving example.

Lismore remained in the Nesbitt family until the 1950s, when it was donated to the Anglican diocese of Montreal. Since 1957 it has served as a home for the aged known as the Nesbitt Anglican Residence.

Lac Davignon

This lake was artificially created in 1969 to have a permanent water source in Cowansville, taking its water from Rivière Yamaska.

Many water activities can be done on the lake. However, motor boats are not allowed. Some activities allowed include swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and more. A Committee was founded in 2007 to protect the lake’s natural habitat and clean water. Although human hands don’t pollute it, a few destructive aquatic plants have tried taking roots in the lake. Despite this, the lake is a gorgeous local attraction and a sight to behold for visitors.

Come sightseeing on the Lac Davignon and enjoy some water activities!

Pont Couvert Freeport

Freeport Covered Bridge was built in 1870 and spans 91 feet long, connecting the two river banks alongside Rivière Yamaska. The bridge takes its name from an old region now located in Cowansville. It went through some renovations in 1992, adding steel support to its infrastructure. Some modern street lamps were added to the bridge in 2014. It went through additional restorations after being damaged twice by large trucks over the years.

There is a sign on both sides of the bridge asking cars to honk before entering its dark interior. Since this red bridge is well-known in the area, some picnic tables and parking was added for tourists to come to visit. They also built a ramp that grants access to the water near the bridge.
