Wildcat Days Festival

The last weekend of June

The discovery and extraction of the numerous resources in the lower Elk Valley continued in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but few inhabitants risked the untamed frontier in the Elkford region.

‘Wildcat’ Charlie Weigert, a trapper renowned for his hospitality in the region and for whom the annual Elkford event ‘Wildcat Days’ is called, was one of the most notable characters. Parades, a Craft & Trade Show, garage sales, a climbing wall, a soapbox derby, a pancake breakfast, live stage entertainment, a family fun zone, and much more are all part of the festival. These community activities will take place on the last weekend of June.

Josephine Falls

Josephine Falls, a 25-metre waterfall located in an isolated canyon scenery, is your reward at the finish of a 2.3 km walking trail.

Professor Henry F. Osborn and his family found this beautiful waterfall in 1905, and it was named after Miss Josephine Osborn, their maid who caught the biggest fish ever recorded from that site. Elkford’s most popular path, a moderate climb, leads to Josephine Falls. Proceed to the Falls, which are about 2.3 kilometres away from the trailhead. The falls are pretty magnificent even in the middle of summer and during a dry year.

Turn east at the four-way stop onto Fording Road after you arrive in Elkford. Follow this route for 5 km and look for the Josephine Falls parking lot signpost. To get to Josephine Falls, use the Forests, Falls, and Lakes Trail.

Height of the Rockies Provincial Park

The height of the Rockies Provincial Park is a vital link in a protected area network that stretches north and south along the Great Divide. This park has high biodiversity values and provides ideal habitat for various animals and plants, including grizzly bears and mountain goats. Both rich forests and everlasting icefields are protected in this area. The spectacular southern Rocky Mountains are known for their geographical and aesthetic variety, provided by seven main mountain passes.

There are fifteen access points into the park, including five significant trailheads. These trailheads are accessible by summer logging roads, from Canal Flats on Highway 93/95 via White River and Palliser River Roads and Elkford and Sparwood on Highway 3 via the Elk River Road.

Mountain Meadows Golf

In 1976, the nine-hole course was developed on a natural elk grazing meadow. It has evolved into one of the most golfer-friendly courses in the Kootenays.

Because each hole has two sets of tees, the back nine is very different from the front. Water comes into play on six of the nine holes, which wind through towering spruce, across and along a flowing stream. They have two of the most challenging par threes in the Kootenays. Each of the remaining holes presents obstacles, but amateurs will enjoy themselves just as much as experienced players, thanks to wide open fairways and plenty of room for wayward shots.

Sulphur Springs

Secluded, undeveloped natural sulphur springs are located 5 kilometres south of Elkford. The spring was once known across the region for its reputed medicinal abilities. The location has a raw diving board, picnic area, and a seven-foot trough cut out of spruce wood that serves as a makeshift tub for those daring enough to have a real wilderness experience. The water temperature is around 20 ℃, which is safe to swim in. The dug-out log may be found in the parking area along the boardwalk. The region is also home to various species, including moose, elk, and deer.

These sulphur springs are located about 5 km South of Elkford. The tourist information centre in Elkford has a handout with very good directions to the site.
