Moose Factory Centennial Park

Founded in 1673 on traditional MĂ´sonĂ®w Ililiw (Cree) lands, Moose Factory is the second oldest Hudson’s Bay Company post.

In the early 19th century, it became the Company’s Southern Department headquarters. After 1821, it supplied posts inland as far as Lake Timiskaming on the Ottawa River watershed. By the 1870s, it had ship-builders, a printing press, a bishop, and a growing multicultural population. With the fur trade’s decline, Moose Factory transitioned from a company town to a permanent settlement for the Ililiw.

Hudson’s Bay Company Staff House

Ontario Heritage

In 1977, the Hudson’s Bay Company donated its Staff House at Moose Factory to the Ontario Heritage Trust. One of the symbols of the company’s long presence in the fur trade of the north, it was constructed in 1850 to provide sleeping quarters for bachelor employees. The Staff House was built of squared logs using techniques borrowed from British shipbuilding.

St. Thomas’ Moose Factory

St. Thomas’ Anglican Church is a historic Carpenter Gothic style Anglican church edifice built by the Hudson’s Bay Company in Moose Factory. Construction was completed in 1885.

St. Thomas’ origins dated to the late 1840s when officials of the Hudson’s Bay Company requested the bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Rupert’s Land to send someone to continue the missionary work of the Rev. George Barnley, a Wesleyan minister who had been in Moose Factory from 1840 to 1848.
