Mackenzie River

The Mackenzie River, also known as Deh Cho (big river), is recognized for its historical significance of being one of the routes for transportation for delivering goods with trading posts all around the area to its other destinations in the North.

It is the second-largest river in North America, after the Mississippi River. Still, it also has excellent river connections and accessibility throughout the communities in the Northwest Territories, including Fort Good Hope and the rest of the Great Slave Lake Region.

The river was discovered and explored by explorers, missionaries, and traders, including Alexander Mackenzie, who happened to be a European fur trader and explored the river in 1789.  The landmark’s attraction is also known for scenic views of the mountains, river, boat paddling, and camping opportunities.

The Ramparts of the Mackenzie

The Ramparts of the Mackenzie, also known as Fee Yee, is the most incredible place for seeking outdoor adventures such as hiking and overseeing the scenic views of the Mackenzie River.

By accessing through the cliffs of the Ramparts, it is also an unforgettable scenery of mountains, plateaus, and rapids. The Ramparts are also surrounded by wildlife and nesting areas for animal habitats. The landmark is also considered a protected area under the supervision of the NWT government. It is recommended to go with a trusted tour guide or a resident to provide you with directions to get to the destination while practicing safety measures and wearing proper attire for the hike.

Our Lady of Good Hope Church

Recommended by Mark

National Historic Site

The church is the oldest in the North of Canada. The construction began in 1856 and ended in 1885 by a group of Oblate Missionaries.

The church from the outside looks relatively unassuming, with a simple white design that you could see in many churches across the globe. What sets this church apart is the interior, with its extraordinarily bright and elaborate frescoes.

Please note that the church is currently a historic landmark, yet service is still regularly held. It will be difficult to enter the church when there is no service. You must find the caretaker of the building to enter.

Arctic Circle Drum Monument

The new Arctic Circle Drum Monument is the latest tourist attraction located on the geographical edge of the Arctic Circle that intersects outside of Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories and Coville Lake, Northwest Territories, by winter road. The significance of this monument is the symbolism that exhibits its diversification of communities and the captivating places to explore in NWT. According to NWT Premier Caroline Cochrane, the essence of this tourist landmark displays a strong representation of Indigenous people and cultures in the territories.

The Arctic Circle Drum Monument is the perfect opportunity for residents, tourists, and travellers to oversee and take pictures of the beautiful historical spot. This monument will be a pivotal moment as an economic force for tourism and other investments that benefit Fort Good Hope and other communities near the monument area.
