Edhaa Historical Site

Ehdaa National Historic Site of Canada is the traditional Dene meeting place on the flats at the southwestern end of Fort Simpson Island.

From the fur trade period, the site remains important to the Liidlii Kue Dene who renew their ongoing connection to the place with seasonal celebrations at the Drum Circle.

The Dene gathered here during their seasonal rounds to allocate land use, arrange marriages, resolve disputes through the Council of the Elders, hold puberty rites, undertake ceremonies of healing and thanksgiving, and trade goods, knowledge and technique.

The site contains facilities built for the 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II.

1987: Pope John Paul II in Fort Simpson

The story of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Fort Simpson is well known across the territories.

In 1984, Pope John Paul II expressed that he wanted to meet with the Indigenous peoples in Canada during his upcoming cross-country tour. But he was prevented from landing due to fog.

He did so in September 1987. On his way to the United States for a papal visit, he stopped over in Fort Simpson for five hours.

Fort Simpson is situated on an island where the MacKenzie River meets the Liard River.

Virginia Falls

Canada’s greatest wilderness waterfall is an easy flightseeing trip from Fort Simpson. At Virginia Falls, the South Nahanni River leaps off a 96-metre cliff, bisected by the great mid-river spire of Mason’s Rock, creating a gusting spray, and a shuddering Earth.

McPherson House

Built in 1936, the McPherson House is a one-and-a-half storey squared-log dwelling that overlooks the Papal Flats in Fort Simpson.

The McPherson House, prominently located at the southern edge of the original Hudson’s Bay Company compound on the Fort Simpson waterfront, provides an unparalleled view of the junction of the Mackenzie and the Liard Rivers, the key trade transportation routes of the period.
