Joey’s Lookout

On the way into Gambo, pass by Joey’s Lookout, a trail and vista where you can see for miles over Freshwater Bay when it’s clear!

Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 29 min to complete the trail. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and trail running, and you’ll unlikely encounter many other people while exploring.

Home Town of Joey Smallwood

Joseph Roberts “Joey” Smallwood was the main force that brought the Dominion of Newfoundland into the Canadian confederation in 1949.

Joey Smallwood was born in Gambo in 1900. He became the first Premier of Newfoundland in 1949 and served until 1972.

He is the eponymous Joey of Joey’s Lookout.

The bronze sculpture of Joseph R. Smallwood by Luben Boykov, an Italian sculptor, is set amid boulders and creates the impression that “Joey” is rising out of the ground to stand tall amid the people.

Clay Cove

Dominion Point Municipal Heritage Site and Walking Trail

A scenic picnic area in Clay Cove with a walking trail to Municipal Heritage Site, Dominion Point. Otters, shore birds and seals are commonly seen here. It is believed that the Beothuk Indigenous People of Newfoundland arrived around 1 AD and once lived at Dominion Point.

There is also an Anglican cemetery that dates back to the 1700s. Accessible from the Freshwater Inn. Please be considerate to the Inn owners, their guests and those who lived here centuries ago.

Mint Brook Trail

This short unmarked trail is only 0.5km, leads to a beautiful swimming and fishing spot and also features a waterfall. The trail is very steep in sections.

It was also the site of a forest fire in 2017. The river is popular with fly fishers during salmon season. There are a lot of rocks in the river, so please use caution if swimming or fly fishing.
