To permanently preserve the Gaspésie’s caribou, the scenic Mount Albert and McGarrigle Mountains, and the salmon of the Sainte-Anne River, the Parc national de la Gaspésie was established in April 1937. In Quebec, this area is today known as the hiking capital. The climate, which moulds the entire environment and produces a richness of species unique to Quebec and possibly the world, is greatly influenced by the altitude of the park’s mountains. A herd of caribou, the last members of this species south of St. Lawrence, prefers environments with arctic-alpine vegetation and tundra landscapes.
