The Stone Shop was built in 1800 by Allan Nixon, who used it as a blacksmith shop. The shop remained in the family for many years. It was used as a buggy repair shop and an early automobile repair shop before being purchased by the Town of Grimsby in 1963 for use as a museum.
Allan Nixon served as an ensign in Butler’s Rangers during the American Revolution. He was also appointed a Lieutenant of the Lincoln Militia and served his country briefly in the first year of the War of 1812. During that time, the Stone Shop was used by the Canadian, British and American troops as a blacksmith shop to repair their equipment and have their horses shod.
