Grimsby Beach | Gingerbread Houses
The Painted Ladies of Grimsby is a historic residential community dating back to the 1800s. It is still well worth visiting to experience its rich history.
In this community, brightly coloured cottages are found, some of which are over 150 years old. The colours include bright yellow, teal blue, lime green, and many other unique mixes.
A tourist destination since the 1850s, Grimsby Beach was the site of the Ontario Methodist Camp Meeting Ground. Centered around a unique temple, the camp provided families across the region with opportunities for fellowship and religious growth. During this period, Grimsby was considered the Chautauqua of the North, an adult education movement that emphasized sharing arts, culture, and literature to enhance and educate communities.
Some visitors spent entire summers in the area.
Today, the area is home to many visitors. You’ll find most of these Victorian Grimsby gingerbread cottages on Auditorium Circle, a small court in Grimsby Beach. There are also more colourful houses on the neighbouring street, Temple Lane.
Come check out this one-of-a-kind neighbourhood. Glance from the road as they are privately owned by generational homeowners. All are welcoming and love meeting friendly and respectful visitors. Come say hi and hear the insight of living in one of Grimsby’s most charming neighbourhoods.
