The Painted Ladies of Grimsby

Grimsby Beach | Gingerbread Houses

The Painted Ladies of Grimsby is a historic residential community dating back to the 1800s. It is still well worth visiting to experience its rich history.

In this community, brightly coloured cottages are found, some of which are over 150 years old. The colours include bright yellow, teal blue, lime green, and many other unique mixes.

A tourist destination since the 1850s, Grimsby Beach was the site of the Ontario Methodist Camp Meeting Ground. Centered around a unique temple, the camp provided families across the region with opportunities for fellowship and religious growth. During this period, Grimsby was considered the Chautauqua of the North, an adult education movement that emphasized sharing arts, culture, and literature to enhance and educate communities.

Some visitors spent entire summers in the area.

Today, the area is home to many visitors. You’ll find most of these Victorian Grimsby gingerbread cottages on Auditorium Circle, a small court in Grimsby Beach. There are also more colourful houses on the neighbouring street, Temple Lane.

Come check out this one-of-a-kind neighbourhood. Glance from the road as they are privately owned by generational homeowners. All are welcoming and love meeting friendly and respectful visitors. Come say hi and hear the insight of living in one of Grimsby’s most charming neighbourhoods.

Nelles Manor

Nelles Manor, the building itself, has a long and colourful history in Grimsby. It was built in the late 18th century by Colonel Robert Nelles, a well-known businessman and political figure in Upper Canada during his time. The Colonel built this Manor when he married.

This home is architecturally beautiful and was significantly ahead of its time. The main walls of the house are an astonishing 3 ½ feet thick and built of local quarried limestone. The main structure, floors, ceilings, and stairs are all built primarily from wood, specifically from the local black walnut. Plaster and lathe were made from straw and horsehair for the finishing on the walls. Maple wood was used for flooring. Overall, the finest and rarest materials at the time were used in the construction of this house, which gives its pristine look today.

Later, Barry and Linda Coutts purchased the house in 1971. Eventually, donating the manor to a museum out of respect, creating the Nelles Manor Heritage House Foundation today.

An open house, with tours by dressed-in-time staff, is available. Get a first-hand feeling of the atmosphere and timeline of life back then. Old-fashioned music is played in the background, with available appetizers and wine and punch on the side.

Grimsby Old Stone Shop

The Stone Shop was built in 1800 by Allan Nixon, who used it as a blacksmith shop. The shop remained in the family for many years. It was used as a buggy repair shop and an early automobile repair shop before being purchased by the Town of Grimsby in 1963 for use as a museum.

Allan Nixon served as an ensign in Butler’s Rangers during the American Revolution. He was also appointed a Lieutenant of the Lincoln Militia and served his country briefly in the first year of the War of 1812. During that time, the Stone Shop was used by the Canadian, British and American troops as a blacksmith shop to repair their equipment and have their horses shod.

Just off Ridge Rd W, south in Grimsby, you’ll find the Beamer Falls Conservation Area. It is also known as the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area.

This place offers relaxing, interconnecting trails with beautiful views. It is perfect for exploring anytime during the year.

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority first acquired the area in 1964 to preserve the Niagara Escarpment and the Forty Creek Valley system. Beamer Falls is one of the smaller conservation areas in the Forty Creek Valley system.
