Famous CanadiansHistory

Dr. Emily Howard Stowe was the first female doctor to practice in Canada and an activist for women’s rights and suffrage.

Her journey was not a simple one. She was initially denied entrance to medical school in Toronto because she was female. Instead, she got admitted to the New York Medical College for Women and returned to Canada to practice medicine.

She organized the Woman’s Medical College, Toronto, in 1883.
