Home Town of Joey Smallwood

02

Joseph Roberts “Joey” Smallwood was the main force that brought the Dominion of Newfoundland into the Canadian confederation in 1949.

Joey Smallwood was born in Gambo in 1900. He became the first Premier of Newfoundland in 1949 and served until 1972.

He is the eponymous Joey of Joey’s Lookout.

The bronze sculpture of Joseph R. Smallwood by Luben Boykov, an Italian sculptor, is set amid boulders and creates the impression that “Joey” is rising out of the ground to stand tall amid the people.
