Iroquois Locks

St. Lawrence Seaway

The St. Lawrence Seaway system is connected by five short canals. They include 15 locks filled and emptied by gravity. Together, the locks make up the world’s most spectacular lift system. Ships are routinely raised to more than 180 metres above sea level, as high as a 60-story building.

The Iroquois Canal is one of them. In 1954, the lift lock was built at Point Iroquois to bypass the control dam.
