Digges Sound

Ivujivik is a village located on a sandy cove surrounded by cliffs that plummet into the waters of Digges Sound.

Digges Sound joins the Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait and is known for its turbulent currents and catapulting sea ice. The cliff is home to walrus, polar bears and thick-billed murres.

Cape Wolstenholme

(Inuit: Anaulirvik)

English explorer Henry Hudson named this cape after Sir John Wolstenholme, an English merchant that sponsored the excursion in hopes of finding the Northwest Passage. The abundance of artic foxes in the Canadian Arctic led to the establishment of the Wolstenholme Trading Post by the Hudson Bay Company.

The Inuit had already been hunting foxes, and the trading post aimed to build relationships with the Inuit to develop the Artic Fox Fur Trade. Parts of the trading post can still be seen on the Cape.

Ivujivik airport

There are no roads leading to Ivujivik, so the only way to reach the village is by plane. The only flights to the village are domestic and from Akulivik or Salluit, both Inuit communities in Northern Quebec. On average, there are two flights to Ivujivik airport daily and fourteen per week. The longest flight is from Akulivik and is thirty-five minutes long.

Birdwatching | Hunting | Fishing

Ivujivik is a favourite hunting place due to its abundance of wildlife in the area, even for Inuit not from the village. A website informs hunters and fishers of the quality of hunting for each day of the year.

In the winter, there are plenty of seals and walruses. In the spring, there are many birds, including the largest colony of thick-billed murres, a bird that looks like a penguin. Saltwater fish are plentiful in the summer, and pods of beluga whales pass by the community during their migrations.

Ivujivik Village

Ivujivik has a Co-op on Main Street surrounded by the multicoloured homes of its villagers. A small alley contains a handful of dull grey buildings and homes and is affectionally called Gray Alley. Children attend Nuutvi School, and Amaaravik Childcare Centre is available for childcare. The Town Centre is next to an Anglican Church. Hunters gather at a dwelling, and it is evident that the animal furs hang out to dry.
