The Most Southern Point on “Mainland” Canada

The actual point in Point Pelee National Park, only minutes from downtown Leamington, is the southernmost piece of land connected to the mainland.

It is a gorgeous place to visit, especially for birdwatchers who flock here during migration periods to spot some species that would be hard to see otherwise. You’ll be immersed in an unforgettable eco-adventure in Canada’s second smallest and most ecologically diverse national park.

 

The southernmost point of Canada is not far from here – this is the south point of Middle Island in Lake Erie.

Waterfront Promenade | Pedestrian Pier

The Pedestrian Pier is a beautiful public area with lounge chairs and picnic tables on a raised cedar deck adjacent to the provincial ferry terminal to Pelee Island and steps away from Seacliff Park and Beach, the Sunset® Amphitheatre, Leamington Marina and the promenade.

Relax on the deck and watch the sunset (or rise!) Grab some ice cream, kick your feet up, and enjoy some of the amazing views Leamington has to offer.

Tomato Capital of Canada

Leamington has a mild climate and fertile soil which combine to make it an area perfect for growing hundreds of fields of tomatoes. The town’s water tower, visible for kilometres in the flat southern Ontario landscape, is in the shape and colour of a giant tomato. The tourist information booth in downtown was shaped like a large fibreglass tomato (closed in 2019).

For many years, Leamington was the home of the H J Heinz factory. Now the tomatoes from the area are made into delicious French Ketchup.

The produce in the area is actually quite vast – from tomatoes to asparagus to watermelon. The area is also home to many greenhouses producing year-round vegetables.

The Town of TV Host David Suzuki

An award-winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster David Suzuki grew up in Leamington. He attended Mill Street Elementary School and Grade 9 at Leamington Secondary School before moving to London, Ontario.

“After World War II, my family was expelled from British Columbia where we had been incarcerated in a remote village in the Rocky Mountains for the duration of the war, so we ended up in Leamington in southern Ontario.  This was a centre of farming in Essex county that boasted of being the home of Heinz ketchup.

We were the first “coloured” family to move into Leamington and my parents were nervous.  As a child, I experienced only minor episodes of overt racism, and my recollections of Leamington are filled with happy memories.”

Seacliff Park Beach

Seacliff Park in Leamington has a nice beach and surrounding park area. It includes treed areas as well as a beach.

Amenities included washrooms both in the park and along the beach. Parking is available, and picnic shelters can be reserved for a fee.

Also, there are the art Amphitheatre and a fantastic children’s splash pad in Seacliff Park.

Pelee Island Ferry

Pelee Island is the most southerly inhabited island in Canada. Pelee Island’s outstanding attraction is its degree of removal from the main thoroughfares of southern Ontario and the adjoining states.

You can make your way to Pelee Island by Ferry. Pelee transportation is provided by the M.V. Jiimaan and the M.V. Pelee Islander between Leamington and Pelee Island.

Monarch Butterflies in Point Pelee

For a few special days each autumn, Point Pelee National Park is a temporary home to thousands of migrating Monarch butterflies. As soon as favourable conditions occur, they begin one of nature’s greatest journeys by crossing Lake Erie. They cannot linger, for their destination is some 3000 km further south, in the mountains of central Mexico!

Concerts at Waterfront Amphitheater

The Music Onthe42 Summer Concert Series is the crown jewel of Leamington’s breathtaking Seacliff Park Amphitheatre. It runs from late June to the end of August at the Amphitheatre.

Seven free concerts feature national and local bands of all genres performing Saturday evenings.

Hogs 4 Hospice

The Annual Hogs for Hospice – Canada’s most southern Motorcycle Rally is a 3-day party in Civic Holiday. Hogs for Hospice has become one of the biggest, most organized motorcycle rallies in Canada.

Marsh Boardwalk

Point Pelee Marsh Boardwalk is a 1.1 kilometre lightly trafficked loop trail located near Leamington, Ontario, Canada that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels.

The trail is primarily used for walking and nature trips and is best used from March until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash.
