Built in 1915, this rural, wood frame “Boomtown” style theatre may not be the first in Alberta but is believed to be the last one standing in western Canada. While it is certainly not “grand” by any means, Majestic Theatre carries historical and architectural significance, representing early settlement history and the progress of theatre development in Alberta. This theatre has been home to magic lantern shows, local productions, silent movies, and early “talkies.”
Over the years, restorations have been made to the building, but its appearance still stands as the original building through photographs taken when it was first established. Today, the Friends of the Majestic Theatre Society, a registered non-profit organization founded in 1998, and the Majestic Players, an amateur theatre group, continue to restore the building and re-integrate the theatre back into the community as a museum but also serving its original function as a working live theatre.
