Lake Kempt

Manawan is a reserve on Lake Kempt’s shore, a gorgeous body of water that makes up an important part of the Atikamekw heritage and lifeways. Traditionally the lake has been an important source of food and transportation, with the water allowing the larger game to be moved by canoe. At the same time, the bountiful sturgeon, pike, big walleye, trout, and whitefish provide an important food source for the Atikamekw people.

Special guides for fishing trips will take you to the best spots on the 65 km lake, ensuring you get the best experience possible! Certified guides can be booked for canoe trips of 2-15 days, in which you will be able to experience the incredible sights and scenery that the land has to offer, including beaver dams and other flora and fauna.

Sugar House Time

April

The Atikamekw people invite you to visit their sugar house, the traditional maple syrup production site. It is said that it is by observing a squirrel drinking sugar water from a maple tree that the first Native, several hundred years ago, began to collect water and boil it to make maple syrup and then share it with the first Europeans who arrived in the seventeenth century. The Atikamekw people still know how to collect water traditionally.

During the month of April of each year, experience a culture and tasting package of 2 nights and three days, which will introduce you to the traditional process of making maple syrup and let you taste some of the region’s most delicious food.

Workshops: Legends, Language, Crafts, Music, and Herbs

The Atikamekw people offer several workshops for deepening your knowledge and understanding of the Atikamekw nation, providing you with the opportunity to learn about the rich history, heritage, and cultural inheritance of the Atikamekw people. Workshops are offered on the traditional language of the Atikamekw and the legends that are foundational to the culture and the region.

The Atikamekw people have preserved the ancient knowledge of feeding and healing from nature without altering it significantly. They offer you a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn from this rich heritage about plants that grow throughout Quebec. A workshop on traditional music will introduce you to the Atikamekw sound and techniques. A workshop on the traditional craftwork of the people is also offered, exploring the various kinds of birch bark craft – from baskets to canoes – made using the traditional techniques of the Aktikamekw people.

Crafts and art from locals are also available for viewing and purchase in the Manawan Tourism center.
