Réserve Faunique de Matane

This beautiful wildlife sanctuary has one of the biggest concentrations of moose in the country, counting more than 4,000 moose! Individuals can engage in an observation activity with a guide, learning more about this beautiful animal and its habitat. Visitors can also fish at their leisure in one of the many lakes found in the eight sectors of the wildlife reserve. Furthermore, guests can partake in some hunting in specific locations on the grounds.

Other activities that can be enjoyed at this location include hiking trails, kayaking and canoeing, cycling, and much more! Nevertheless, there are certainly plenty of breathtaking landscapes to be seen! Many lodgings are found on-site to accommodate everyone, letting people immerse themselves in nature. The cabins come with a kayak that can be taken on the waters and a barbeque to cook food. Enjoy some fun outdoor activities and see the sights the Réserve Faunique de Matane offers!

Les Jardins de Doris

From mid-June to mid-October

These wonderful gardens have been open since June 2001, with an ever-growing collection of flowers and plants that are a must-see! You can admire an abundant collection of plants using the diverse pathways and observation tower. The owners, Doris and Sylvain, have made it their mission to offer a wide variety of plants and bring their visitors joyfully. Additionally, they help with the reintegration of troubled youth into society.

Les Jardins de Doris is considered by many to be an oasis in the middle of the city, the perfect place to relax after a long day. Besides the many gardens and greenhouses, there are plenty of other activities for visitors to enjoy. These include horticulture, animal observation and petting zoo, sundial expositions, a large chessboard, and many more. Drop by the gardens to catch a glimpse of all these beautiful flowers for yourself!

Phare-Musée Maritime de Matane

From early June to late September

This iconic lighthouse has been around since 1907, projecting a brilliant light to aid boats to find their way at sea. These days, the lighthouse has been retired and is used as a museum to educate tourists about the local history. Guests can find photographs and objects exposed to teach them about the marine history of this beautiful region. Visitors can climb the 57 steps to the top of the lighthouse, where local sea navigation instruments have been installed.

The guided interpretive tours are available in French and English to all who dare enter its walls. The guided tour lasts about 20 minutes and is available at a very affordable price. A picnic area is found outside for those who want to sit down for a bite to eat and admire the seaside view. Come to the Phare-Musée Maritime de Matane with your travelling companions to learn more about the local marine history and admire the sights!

Sentier International des Appalaches

From late June to early October

This massive trail spans over 650 km and connects all the coastal towns of Quebec, New Brunswick, and the State of Maine in the United States! There are various pathways and trails that visitors can take, which range from easy to very difficult. The town of Matane’s section of the trail has many uphill and downhill sections, wooded areas with viewing decks, streams and waterfalls, and more. Some sights visitors can see include the Hélène waterfall, Chic-Choc mountain range, and Matane River valley, amongst other beautiful sceneries.

It is recommended that hikers plan their trajectory or split their hike into multiple days to avoid overworking themselves. Many observation decks can be found along the way, providing much-needed rest while admiring the natural landscape. Other amenities include picnic areas, camping grounds, washrooms, and more. The Appalachian Trail is pet friendly. Therefore you can bring your furry friends with you while you hike! Take a hike on the Sentier International des Appalaches, and you won’t regret it!

Îles de Matane & Parc des Îles

This beautiful island spans 1.2 km of walking trails, bordering the shores of the Fleuve Saint-Laurent (St-Lawrence River). It is home to a park with many activities for people of all ages, including a beach area. Some of the activities found at the park include a playground, pedal boats and kayak rental, mini-golf, and much more for you to discover! It is an ideal location for people who enjoy playing sports, as it contains a basketball court and beach volleyball. Whether travelling alone or in a group, there is something for everyone. If you’re looking for a great way to spend a relaxing day in Matane, spend time at l’Îles de Matane with its park and beach!

Sentier de la Grotte des Fées

From mid-June to late September

Le Sentier de la Grotte des Fées is located 6 km within the forest, proposing a hike of intermediate difficulty to witness the beautiful sights at the top. The name of this location is based on a legend, where the face of a fairy could be seen within the water vapours of the waterfall. Back in the days, rumours say it was a popular spot for clandestine meetings and seasonal hunts. Additionally, the caves and rock cavities have been around for over 500 million years. Nevertheless, it has seen its share of history!

During their hike, visitors can find various informative panels about the fauna and flora of the region. The twisting caves lead the way to a canyon and waterfall area, with many observation points along the way. The forest and streams make for a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by the beauty of nature. The views of all these natural formations will take your breath away. Whether you’re an avid hiker or want to witness its glory, the Sentier de la Grotte des Fées awaits you!

Poste d’Observation du Saumon

From late June to mid-August

This fishway observation deck allows visitors to witness the many Atlantic salmon from their two wide bay windows. Guests can look at their vast exposition of photographs and historical objects related to the history of the dams and Rivière Matane (Matane River). A guide-interpreter on site can give people more detailed information on the Atlantic salmon. They offer fishing equipment rentals and can provide technical lessons on fly fishing. Additionally, they have a shop for all your fishing needs and souvenirs. If you want to set your eyes on Atlantic salmon and learn more about the local river’s history, drop by the Poste d’Observation du Saumon this summer!

Promenade des Capitaines

This walking trail, known as the “Captain’s Walk,” is located in the middle of the downtown area of Matane. The trail gives a wonderful view of the Matane Salmon River, boarding its shores. Various informative panels on the path educate visitors about the stories of well-known marine captains that have left a mark on the local history.

On top of learning about the region’s historical marine exploits, guests can admire a ship replica on site. Several commemorative plaques are dispersed on the walking trail to honour the lives of the captains and their families. This area is great for observing the salmon in their natural habitat while taking a leisurely walk with your pets. Spend a calming afternoon alone or with your travelling companions at the Promenade des Capitaines!

Société d’Histoire & de Généalogie de Matane

This local museum was founded in 1949 by Charles-Édouard Vézina, whose mission focused on preserving the regional heritage and educating people to honour the past. Learning more about the history and genealogy of the town is a great way to respect the values of the ancestors that came before us and find culture in our roots. People can take self-guided tours to admire the exhibits that highlight the region’s detailed past. They host permanent and temporary exhibitions, such as the Claude Picher exhibit on his colourful painting canvas of the region between 1990 and 1995.

 

The Société d’Histoire & de Généalogie de Matane has a vast and extensive library of records, where volunteers can help you track down your family’s ancestral roots. Various objects are on display at the museum, including documents on past marriages and parish records, genealogical photographs, old films and life narratives, and much more. They have a boutique and also occasionally host activities throughout the year. Take a stroll around the Société d’Histoire & de Généalogie de Matane to appreciate the local history that made the town what it is today!

Mont-Castor

From mid-December to mid-April

The local ski hill has been around for over 70 years and offers 19 downhill ski and snowboarding slopes. They have courses of varying difficulties, from beginner to advanced, accommodating people of all ages and abilities. Besides skiing and snowboarding, they also have snowshoeing and snow hiking trails with access to the mountain range. Additionally, they offer tubing and a freestyle snow park for those looking to try something else. They have a group and private lessons for those that want to improve their skills.

They provide rental equipment for all sports available at Mont-Castor, with a restaurant on the premises for those wanting to grab a bite to eat during their getaway. Other services and amenities available to guests include lockers, a boutique, a repair shop, conference and meeting room bookings, and more. They host various activities and competitions throughout the year. Drop by Mont-Castor during the winter months to enjoy some skiing, snowboarding, or any of the other fun activities!

Club de Golf Matane

From mid-May to mid-October

The local golf club is near the Matane River and Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence), granting golfers a beautiful view of the area as they swing away at the ball. This panoramic course has 18 holes, par 71, and spans over 6,000 yards. The local environment is displayed for all to see, taking advantage of the surrounding wooded areas and riverbanks. There are lessons available for youth and adults, helping them improve their golfing skills.

There are various amenities for guests, such as showers, a restaurant and bar, a mountain bike and hiking trail, a driving range, carts, and much more for you to discover. Additionally, they offer on-site equipment rentals and a boutique for all your golfing needs. People who want to stay overnight can use their RV sites and relax by the outdoor fire pits. This restaurant and pub opened its doors 40 years ago and has become cherished by local residents and visitors. They have a diverse menu to satisfy everyone’s taste buds, serving many traditional Canadian meals. They offer many appetizers such as soups, snails, chicken wings, salads, shrimp cocktails, and more. There are many main dishes served at this restaurant, which include steak, meat skewers, salads, chicken breast, salmon and cod, spaghetti, poutine, etc. Nevertheless, many of their meals have become classic staples, such as the Gaspésie cod.

They have gluten-free options and will accommodate anyone with an allergy to ensure they have the best experience possible. People interested in coming for lunch will be served a soup, main dish, dessert, and beverage at an affordable price. The staff at this location is quite friendly, and the service is rather quick. The warm and harmonious atmosphere makes this a great place to stop for a bite to eat. Eat a delicious meal at Restaurant-Bar le 21 during your trip to Matane!

This quaint little pub and microbrewery has been serving customers since 2017, offering patrons a wide variety of beers. A total of 25 beers are found at La Fabrique, all brewed on-site. Their selection of classic and seasonal beers includes Rivière Blanche (4%), Whisky Jane (8%), Patriote (4%), Frontière (9%), and much more for you to discover! Their beer products can be purchased on the online shop of the microbrewery or at other local supermarkets in Quebec.

The pub has an extensive selection of food and drinks, using local and regional products. Some menu items include chicken wings and fries, calamari, burgers and sandwiches, poutines, etc. There are also vegan and vegetarian options available. Throughout the year, they have many cultural events, art exhibitions, and performances presented at the pub. The staff is very friendly and willing to help answer any questions.
