Tidewater Provincial Park

One of the places that everyone must visit when coming to the Town of Moosonee is the Tidewater Provincial Park. It is a beautiful park of 2422 acres and made up of five different islands – Charles Island, South Charles Island, Butler Island, Hayes and Bushy Island. It is one of the only provincial parks not run by the Ministry of Natural resources but operated by the Ontario parks and the nearby Moose Cree First Nation. The whole park is situated on the Moose river.

The provincial park is beautiful and has the most abundant wildlife to view, such as black bears, owls, muskrats, and, if you are lucky enough, occasionally a beluga whale close to the shoreline. But besides the fantastic wildlife view, you can also participate in many fun activities at the provincial park. You can go fishing and catch as many trout as you can. Canoe to the different islands, go camping with the many accommodations provided, or hike. The Riverside hiking trail is probably one of the most incredible trails that looks over the Moose River.

With the Tidewater Provincial Park, there is always something to explore and do!

Moose River

Situated between the five islands that make Tidewater Provincial Park and 104km long, the Moose River is a magnificent river to explore. The river holds many different species of salmon that you can go fishing for, as well as the occasional beluga whale sighting when canoeing.

Not to mention it’s a river that lets you further explore out of the Cochrane district, where the Town of Moosonee is settled. From the river, you can go to the Moose Factory, a community settlement, to explore more attractions. Or flow down with the river stream to the Moose River Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a sanctuary filled with wildlife and protected species. The best part is you can take water taxis to get there. However, if you want a proper tour of the whole lake, there are many touring companies that can take you around, such as Moose River Tours.

Sky Ranch Restaurant

A popular restaurant in Moosonee that does not have any road access, the Sky Ranch is primarily a family-run restaurant. The restaurant was founded by mother Rhoda 15 years ago after she moved with her family from Newfoundland and Labrador for better opportunities.

Sky Ranch offers many of the same types of breakfasts, lunch and dinner meals in any diner, such as burgers, eggs, breakfast bacon, stuffed chicken dinner and alcoholic beverages. However, the homemade touch it holds separates their food from the rest. Since the restaurant is pretty isolated, customers can order food from the restaurant by calling to have the amazing workers deliver it to them.

Railway Car Museum

Only open during July and August, the Railcar Museum is quite self-explanatory, given its title. It’s a museum of a Railcar that tells an important story of Moosonee and its history as the railhead of Ontario. It’s a must-to-see in the Town of Moosonee.

Church of the Apostles

Holding a deep history with the First Nations people groups of Cree and Ojibway, the Church of the Apostles does more than just Sunday services. In the summer and spring months, the beautiful Church of the Apostles opens its doors for all to enjoy tea in their tearoom and shop in their thrift shop.

Abitibi Canyon Base Camp

Opened by Mike from his love of snowmobiling in the Cochrane region, the Abitibi Canyon Base Camps is one of the best snowmobile camps that is fun and reliable for all riders. Moosonee has a lot of excellent snow trails; however, it’s always recommended by the town to take a snowmobile tour guide. That is where Mike Abitibi Canyon Base Camp comes in.

The Abitibi Canyon Base Camp provides a cool and exciting sledding experience in Moosonee through their  “Tour to the Edge of the Arctic.” The Tour to the Edge of the Arctic is a three to four-day sledding trip that provides lodge accommodations, meals and a guide working with you every step of the journey to let you explore everything Moosonee has to offer and beyond. One day of their Edge of the Arctic tour takes you to Onakawaan, where polar bears typically roam. So reach out to Abitibi Canyon Base Camp if you want to experience a one-in-a-lifetime snowmobile tour.
