Mundare Sausage

The place you must visit in Mundare is this 12.8 m (42 feet) tall statue of a Ukrainian “kolbasa” sausage. It pays tribute to Stawnichy’s Meat Processing, a famous sausage factory operating in town since 1959. This giant sausage replica is not something you can often come by in any other town.

Besides the large sausage, you will also find a buffalo replica. It is one of the buffalo replicas once located along Gateway Boulevard during the World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton in August 2001.

Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village

Head over to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village to experience the history brought to life. The village is an outdoor museum with costumed interpreters that narrate the first-hand stories of early settlers to east central Alberta. Visitors can learn about the impact on Alberta’s cultural identity and heritage from the early Ukrainian immigration to Canada.

Over 40 buildings from farms and towns across east-central Alberta have been relocated to this village. These buildings are researched, restored, and furnished to their early 20th-century appearance for visitors to explore.

The open-air museum is open from May to September and is approximately 20 minutes away from Mundare by car.

Whitetail Crossing Golf Club

Covering 220 acres of land is the Whitetail Crossing Golf Club. It is an 18-hole course that incorporates the landscape’s natural features, such as existing ridges and wetlands. Ten of the holes feature water or naturalized wetland, while three of the holes are cut out of the existing bush. The remaining five holes are abundant with sand and native grass, giving it a distinctive “links” look and feel.

The course also features five sets of tee boxes that range from 5279 yards up to 7082 yards. Players of all levels are welcome to join this “must play” course in Northern Central Alberta.

Basilian Fathers Museum

The Basilian Fathers Museum was established in 1953 to preserve the history, culture, and religion of the pioneers of the Beaver Lake–Mundare settlement and the early Basilians who served the area. The building was constructed in 1990 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Ukrainian settlers in Canada. Prior to this, the first museum was a two-story building behind the present Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church.

In the museum, you can find items illustrating the lifestyle and spiritual guidance of Ukrainian settlers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Apart from ethnographic and religious artifacts, visitors can find documentary archives and more than 6,000 photographs. Furthermore, there is a non-circulating reference library with antique maps and books that date back to the fifteenth century.

Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church

Recommended by Mark

St. Peter and Paul is a Ukrainian Catholic church in Mundare made of brick. The church was built from 1968-1969 by the architect Eugene Olekshy. The church is very low, which makes it appear grounded in soil.

Surrounding the church are also several markers, such as the church bell tower and a monument that honours the early Basilian missionaries in Canada.
