Monument du Portageur

The Portageur monument, designed by Joseph Dickner and produced by Jean-Marc de Courval, was erected by the Commission of national monuments in 1975. This monument refers to the Portage trail, a historical road of waterways and dirt roads.

For millennia, Amerindians travelled between the Bay of Fundy and the St. Lawrence River by canoeing on Lake Témiscouata and the Madawaska River or, more often, on the Saint-François River and Lake Pohénégamook.

Parc Julie-Gagné

This park is excellent for people of all ages, but it is especially perfect if you have young children.

In addition to the bright playground, there is a soccer field, beach volleyball court, two petanque fields, 100’ zip line, running trail, and (somehow) more. The kids are free to run around without the risk of shattering anything, and you can have fun with your friends, too! When you need a break from the activity, you can sit down and have a breather, or you can go to the picnic area to eat your lunch—which is guaranteed to be delicious and satisfying after all that physical exertion.

Pot à l’Eau-de-Vie (Brandy Pot) Lighthouse

With John Page as a designer and Louis Déry as construction lead, this lighthouse was built in 1862 on the southeastern tip of Pot du Phare, with the tower standing at just over 9 meters. In 1884, an annex was added as a storehouse and summer kitchen. Jean-Baptiste des Trois Maisons dit Picart was the first keeper of the light, but during the approximate century that this lighthouse was active, the two primary families that managed it was the Richard family (1874-1914) and the Dubé family (1920-1964)—until the light became automated in 1964.

The structure’s renovation in 1989 was inspired by John Page’s original designs, and on August 20 of that same year, a copper lantern room was built atop the tower.

The lighthouse is now a recognized Federal Heritage Building open to visitors. You can climb the restored spiral wooden staircase to access a panoramic view at the top of the tower. Do not miss your chance to stand atop a beautiful historic structure—it’s just a short drive (approximately 10 minutes) from Notre-Dame-du-Portage!

Piscine Municipale

There is, quite possibly, nothing better than jumping into a cold, refreshing pool on a hot summer day—even better if it is a pool with an incredible, breathtaking view!

This public salt water pool is very family-friendly. It is, naturally, a popular hub for the kids to play, have fun, and get important exercise—which, parents know, means that they will hopefully tire themselves out enough to make bedtime go smoothly.

Don’t let the little ones scare you, however! Everyone—regardless of age and parental status— has the right to stay cool and soak in the view.

There are a variety of rates and options available, so for full details, make sure to check their website!

A total of five rooms are available for rent, and three of them have a lovely view of the St-Laurent River. There are two rooms that share a bathroom, though, so make sure to check the details when booking if you want a private bathroom! Every morning, a satiating, homemade meal is served: fresh bread, sweet jams, fluffy pancakes… There are even options for those who prefer gluten-free or vegetarian foods! And from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., you can access the kitchen to get a quick snack or make your dinner—all of which you can enjoy out on the terrace while watching the glowing sunset.

You might want to know: National Geographic has claimed the sunset in Notre-Dame-du-Portage to be one of the most beautiful in the world.

Auberge Du Portage

Originally a summer home constructed in 1903, it was converted into an inn nearly three decades later. Ginette and Claude Defoy became the new owners of this resort in 1969, making updates and additions throughout the years and ultimately making a name for themselves in the world of R&R (rest & relaxation, rest & rehabilitation, rest & recuperation… whatever you want to call it).

A Victorian-style structure with considerate, modern touches, it is difficult to feel anything but calm and content when staying here—especially considering you are right by the magnificent St. Lawrence River, which is a perfect canvas to catch and reflect the pretty rays of the sun.

Auberge Du Portage is completely catered to your physical, mental, and emotional wellness. A sensory center is designed as a course of various treatments and therapies to eliminate toxins and rejuvenate your mind and body. If you want to be more selective, you can choose from more than fifty individual treatments, such as a lymphatic drainage massage, a refreshing apple exfoliant, a full-body algae wrap, a mud bath… Reading the long, beautiful list of options is arguably a form of therapy.

If you want accommodation, treatments, and meals included during your stay—and want to get the best bang for your buck—look into their various packages!

Chalet des Sports

This is the perfect place to go if you want to have fun while being physically active (and need to keep your kids occupied and happy).

During the warmer months, you can access (for free!) the tennis court, basketball court, and hiking trails, and in the winter season, you can use the snowshoe trails, cross-country ski slope, tube slide, and ice rink.

The facilities are open throughout the week, but some are first come, first served, so keep that in mind when planning your visit!
