Onoway Museum

01

In Onoway, you will come across the Old Brick School. Built in 1921, it was an elementary school until it was vacated in June 2007. The school has since been reinstituted as the Onoway Museum, where it preserves the history of the school and the surrounding community.

The four classrooms inside the building each feature an exhibit of a particular theme: School Room, Country Home, Main Street, and Community Life/Farm. They provide an opportunity to learn about the story of this area’s founding, settlement, and development in north-central Alberta.

Inside the museum, you will also find the Onoway Archives and Reading Room. The Archives are home to an extensive collection of school registers from one-room schools in the area that date back to 1909. In the Reading Room, you can take the time to enjoy the comfortable space and explore a comprehensive collection of school textbooks, cookbooks, local newspapers, magazines and books on Alberta and local history.
