World’s Largest Tree Burl

The largest burl – Ronning Burl – is 20 feet tall, weighs approximately 30 tons, and has a diameter of 20 feet.

A burl is an overgrowth of cells that results in a sizeable bulbous growth. They are typically about the size of a fist; however, Port McNeill, originally a base camp for loggers, is home to the two largest burls in the world.

Another burl was discovered in 1976 and is now covered in a fibreglass mould to prevent rot.

The new largest burl is not covered in fibreglass and is easily visible. It is the perfect location for two of the world’s largest burls.
