To permanently preserve the GaspĂ©sie’s caribou, the scenic Mount Albert and McGarrigle Mountains, and the salmon of the Sainte-Anne River, the Parc national de la GaspĂ©sie was established in April 1937. In Quebec, this area is today known as the hiking capital. The climate, which moulds the entire environment and produces a richness of species unique to Quebec and possibly the world, is greatly influenced by the altitude of the park’s mountains. A herd of caribou, the last members of this species south of St. Lawrence, prefers environments with arctic-alpine vegetation and tundra landscapes.
