Musée de la Nature

This nature museum is a must-see for anyone visiting Sainte-Rose-du-Nord. It was founded in 1972 by Mrs. Agnès and her husband, Jean-Claude Grenon, but the locals also helped to identify the many species that occupied their village. Displayed are 3000 pieces, including preserved animals, tree knots, mushrooms, and more. Whether children are tagging along or not, visitors of all ages will be enchanted by this house-turned-museum.

The prices are $10 for adults, $5 for children, and special prices for groups. You will want to check their website to see their current hours, but you can also call to make reservations throughout the year.

Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay

The Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park is somewhere you must make time for if you wish to be surrounded by beautiful, majestic scenery. The activities you can partake in will depend on the time of year your trip takes place, but you are guaranteed a magical experience regardless of the season. Some of the many activities available are riding zodiac boats, hiking, kayaking, camping, cruising, fishing, and more!

Since this is a national park, there is a set limit to the number of visitors that are allowed in a day, thus you will want to purchase your right of access online—either in the form of daily access or an annual card—up to 30 days before your visit. You should also check the website for information regarding schedules, rates, and reservations.

Cap à l’Est Lighthouse

This iconic lighthouse was erected in 1910 at 33 feet, and its bright, white light extends to 76 feet above the water. Cap à l’Est Lighthouse is the last traditional lighthouse to be built along the Saguenay River.

Keep in mind that this lighthouse cannot be reached by car. Instead, it must be accessed by foot—approximately a 2-hour hike—which means visitors are limited to those physically capable of making the long trek. It is certainly not the most accessible place to get to, but the magnificent view is worth the effort.

L’Église

From 1955 to 1969, this church was renovated by the parish priest, Abbé Antonin Simard, and several local volunteers. Together, they would search the forest, gather whatever stumps and branches they could get their hands on, and use those materials to build and reconstruct. There isn’t one inch of any room in this church that its founders haven’t touched, and it is tangible proof of the love and labour that made this beautiful village what it is today.

When visiting, keep an eye out for L’autel du Saint-Sacrement (The Altar of the Blessed Sacrament), La lampe du sanctuaire (The Lamp of the Sanctuary), Le chemin de croix (The Way of the Cross), and La chaise ou Ambon (The Chair of Ambon). There is a quiet power that resonates from the religious symbolism embedded in each piece.

Navettes maritimes du FJORD

The Fjord Marine Shuttle

The Fjord Marine Shuttle offers two round trips departing from Sainte-Rose-du-Nord from late June to early September.

The shorter cruise takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. During those three hours, you will see the beautiful cove Descente des Femmes, the regal mountains of Fjord, Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, Saint-Basile-de-Tableau (a small village that faces a majestic rock wall called the Tableau), the Notre-Dame-du-Saguenay statue, the bay in Rivière Éternité, Parc National du Fjord-du-Saguenay, and Caps Éternité, Liberté and Éternité.

The 6-hour cruise departs at 10:00 a.m. and arrives in Sainte-Rose-du-Nord around 4:00 p.m. You will see all the same things that the 3-hour cruise entails, but this longer excursion means you get to enjoy a stopover in L’Anse-St-Jean, officially considered one of the most beautiful villages in Quebec. While there, you can enjoy your packed lunch or eat at the restaurant on the dock (you will want to make a reservation before going).

Visit their website for cruise details, schedules, and ticket prices. You can even design your own round-trip and one-way route if you wish to explore other villages along the Fjord!

Zec Martin-Valin

The Zec Martin-Valin territory contains more than 650 lakes, and there are countless fish species in each of those bodies of water. Depending on your preferences, many lakes have parking lots and landing areas, while more than half can be accessed by porting. Specifically, Lake Guimond—introduced in 2018—allows those with reduced mobility to fish safely without needing a boat. In addition, Lake Guimond has a dry toilet, a 50-meter-long wooden platform that leads to the lake, and a floating platform that helps launch your line to a further distance.

No need to fret if you are not a fisher! You can instead choose to hunt, ride boats and canoes—both are available to rent—or reserve one of their semi-furnished campsites. There are a bunch of different pricing packages available, so make sure to check out their website for FAQ and booking information.
