Sydney Mines Heritage Museum and Fossil Centre

Focused on the heritage and history of Sydney Mines, this museum presents and explores the various treasures and trademarks unique to Cape Breton. In recognition of the town’s history in coal mining, there is a collection of artifacts common to that area that are available for visitors to view. Another exciting exhibit is the restored train station from the early 1900s.

The Cape Breton Fossil Centre, adjacent to the Heritage Museum, features one of the largest Carboniferous Plant Fossil collections in all of North America – composed of over 800 plant fossil displays.

Princess Colliery Disaster Monument

This brick-based pulley system serves as a memorial for all the miners killed during the Princess Mine disaster in 1938 and was completed and unveiled in 1990. It is positioned at the site previously occupied by the colliery and has been designed to resemble the entrance to a mine shaft.

Twenty-one people were killed by the Colliery Disaster, with an additional sixty-one being injured. This monument symbolizes reflection and respect for all those affected by this horrific event.
