Viking Museum

Located in the town’s original hospital building, the Viking Museum holds a detailed record of the town’s history. Here you can find various agricultural tools, uniforms, equipment, and more items that would have been used in Viking’s past.

The museum also holds a collection of newspapers from throughout the years, so you can look through decades of the town’s history and learn about the major events that helped shape the town into what it is today.

Four buildings have also been restored and moved on site. These include a store/post office from 1903, a school from 1907, a farmhouse from 1914, and a church from 1938. By looking through these, you can see what Viking in the early 1900s would have looked like.

School on Wheels Museum

School on Wheels Museum is home to a passenger coach converted into a travelling school by Fred Sloman. Due to Fred Sloman’s suggestion for a school on wheels, several dozen children in remote regions could receive an education. Seeing its success, the Ontario Department of Education began the school on wheels by creating seven other school cars operated on major railway lines in the north.

Each one of the cars would stay in one area for six days, and the teachers provided education to the children and adults in the area. Eventually, the school on wheels program stopped, leaving the coaches unattended. Some were taken to museums while Sloman’s car was left in a rail yard.

Eventually, it was brought to Clinton and is now on display at the School on Wheels Museum.

Église Saint-Jérôme

The first church in Métabetchouan, in the Lac-Saint-Jean region, was built in 1870. The current impressive Saint-Jérôme de Métabetchouan church was blessed in 1928, replacing the previous church.

The size of a cathedral, the red granite church with two bell towers are inspired by the Gothic pen, and its interior impresses in more ways than one. Indeed, it has three paintings (possibly by Charles Huot), a statue of Saint Jerome carved in wood, the altar of the Holy Reserve carved for the previous church, a collection of statues nestled harmoniously on the top of the walls, a colossal Czechoslovakian glass chandelier and the organ from Casavant Frères, installed in 1928.

Old Carleton County Court House

The Old Carleton County Courthouse is a pristinely restored glimpse into the history of New Brunswick’s first town.

The Court House was built in 1833 in Upper Woodstock. The building served as a courthouse and the meeting place for the County Council, as well as a venue for concerts, fairs, and public events. After a new courthouse was built in Woodstock in 1911 the property was passed through two private owners, both of which used the courthouse as a barn and made many alterations to the structure of the building, degrading the historic value of the site.

However, in 1960 the Carleton County Historical Society was formed, and set out to purchase and restore the old courthouse. The restoration process took more than two decades but resulted in the courthouse receiving Provincial designation as an historic site.

The restored courthouse was ceremoniously opened by Princess Anne in 1986, and to date plays host to many events. It is open to the public by appointment from June to September.
