Viking Community Festival

June

Previously known as Viking in the Streets, the Viking Community Festival involves two days full of fun activities. The festival celebrates the Viking’s rich Scandinavian history.

Join in to watch the parade march along the main street, participate in the chili cook-off, or try to brave the lutefisk eating competition.

With fun activities for children and adults, the Viking Community Festival is a great event to come and learn about the community while having a great time.

Viking Museum

Located in the town’s original hospital building, the Viking Museum holds a detailed record of the town’s history. Here you can find various agricultural tools, uniforms, equipment, and more items that would have been used in Viking’s past.

The museum also holds a collection of newspapers from throughout the years, so you can look through decades of the town’s history and learn about the major events that helped shape the town into what it is today.

Four buildings have also been restored and moved on site. These include a store/post office from 1903, a school from 1907, a farmhouse from 1914, and a church from 1938. By looking through these, you can see what Viking in the early 1900s would have looked like.

If you’re into history, the Viking Museum is a must-see on your trip through the town.

Carena

Named after the old arena, which burnt down in 2005, the carena complex houses the town’s ice rink, library, walking track, and fitness center. Various town events are also held throughout the year, so check out the town calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.

While you’re there, grab something to eat at the carena kitchen, and look at all the information and memorabilia related to hockey’s most famous brothers, the Sutters.

So, no matter what you like, you’ll always find something at the carena.

Viking Ribstones

Located a little southeast of Viking, the Viking Ribstones is an important site for the Indigenous peoples of Alberta. They are two stones which have been carved to resemble the ribs of an animal. Their purpose is to serve as a monument to Old Man Buffalo, the protector of bison, which were vital in the survival of the Indigenous peoples of Alberta.

Understanding the history of Canada’s Indigenous peoples is vital in moving towards reconciliation, so come to learn more about the Indigenous peoples of this land, their culture, and their beliefs.

Troll Park

Themed after the Scandinavian heritage of the town, the troll park is a beautiful park to walk around, have a picnic, and learn a little bit about the Scandinavian history of Viking. Throughout the park, you can find various statues and images of trolls on top of other Scandinavian items, such as a Viking ship and Scandinavian plants.

Infographics are located throughout the park, detailing information about some of the park’s attractions and locations that were important to the Scandinavian settlers of the town. This makes the park great for any history buffs or anyone looking to catch a glimpse of early Scandinavian and Canadian history.

So, pack a lunch and your camera, and visit Troll Park.

Eastview Campground

If you’re a fan of camping, then the Eastview campground is the perfect place to stay when passing through the town. The campground has fully serviced sites if you’re planning on taking an RV and sites without power and water for tents.

Both the tent and RV sites also include firewood and access to showers located on the campgrounds. Also located on the campgrounds is Eastview playground, which is perfect if you plan on bringing kids along.

If you enjoy camping, staying at Eastview Campground will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable time.

Camp Lake Park

Another great spot to stay in Camp Lake Park, a campground located just east of town. This park contains a beautiful beach that is great for swimming and boating. Playgrounds, volleyball nets, and basketball courts are also available.

Camp Lake includes powered and non-powered sites, showers, cookhouses, and firewood to make the most of your stay.

Grab your friends, a towel, and a swimsuit, and have a stay at the beautiful Camp Lake Park.

Tea House

Do you enjoy quaint cafés and Scandinavian art? Then the Tea House is perfect for you. Located in the town’s original railway station, the Tea House has various food and drink options that are perfect for sitting and enjoying the Scandinavian rose paintings created by artists.

The Tea House is also located next to Troll Park, which makes it the perfect place to stop and grab some food for a picnic. Walking through the gardens with fresh baked café goods sounds like a great way to spend a summer afternoon.
