Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock

Buffalo has played a very important role in the history of Alberta. They were used for food and clothing for the Indigenous peoples of Alberta and still have an important cultural role to this day. After the near extinction of the buffalo in the mid-1800s due to settler overhunting, the Buffalo National Park was created in 1909 to house a population of buffalo.

Today, Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock is what remains of the original Buffalo National Park. There you can still find a small herd of buffalo roaming the plains, keeping the original history of the park intact. So, make sure to stop by and learn about the history of Alberta and Wainwright while also seeing these beautiful animals in person.

Canada’s Largest Bison Statue

The Buffalo statue in Wainwright was deemed ‘Canada’s largest buffalo.’ The reason for the statue is to remember the great buffalo herd that roamed Buffalo National Park. The fibreglass statue stands ten feet tall. You can visit the large statue and think back to when there used to be herds of animals around.

Petroleum Park

Petroleum Park is well known for displaying one of Alberta’s first pump jacks. The oil industry is a very important part of Wainwright’s history, and this park honours that. The pump jack displayed in the park represents the ones that first existed in the 1920s and 1930s. The park is a nice place to go for a walk, have a picnic, or enjoy the history of Wainwright.

Battle River Trestle

Located about 15 km northwest of Wainwright, a rest stop and lookout point overlooks the historic Battle River Railway Trestle. This trestle was the largest in Canada upon its completion in 1908 and is still in use. Information boards about the bridge’s history can be found at the lookout point.

Along with information about the history of the trestle, the lookout point also features a stunning view of Battle River and the valley below. In the later hours, it makes for the perfect spot to go and watch the sunset over the prairies. And if you’re lucky, you might see a train crossing the trestle and see this piece of history in use.

So go for a short hike along the trail, and admire the natural and artificial beauty of the area.

Memorial Clock Tower

Created in 1925, the Memorial Clock Tower was put up as a memorial to honour the town residents who died in the first World War, and a plaque of their names can be found on the premises. After the fire that devastated the town in 1929, the clock tower was left standing. Then, after the Second World War, a second memorial was held at the clock tower, and a second plaque was put up.

Now, the Memorial Clock Tower still stands in downtown Wainwright. It is a symbol of the town’s history and the struggles the people of Wainwright have endured. So, if you want to learn more about the town and how it used to be, visit this piece of history.
