Geocaching Capital of Canada

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a family-friendly outdoor game. It is often referred to as “treasure hunting with a high-tech twist” because you use the geocaching.com website and either a GPS device or a smartphone. There is no charge to play.

A geocache (cache) is a container that someone has hidden. They record the coordinates (location) online so that you can find it. When you find it, you sign your user name inside, record your find online, then go find another cache.

The Geocaching Capital of Canada is comprised of a string of seven hamlets:  Irondale, Gooderham, Tory Hill, Wilberforce, Harcourt, Highland Grove and Cardiff. Most are located within the Municipality of Highlands East.

Historical Wilberforce Mural

Wilberforce was established as “Pusey,” a station on the Irondale, Bancroft and Ottawa Railway (IB&O), and named for railway president Charles J. Pusey. This little railway had initially been built to carry iron ore from open pit mines in Irondale.

Find this history on the mural on the side of the Fire Station. Check this mural from Essonville Line. Great place for a selfie!

Wilberforce Graphite Mine

A historic location that has great views and a good hike. The deposit was worked for graphite from 1910 to 1913 by the Virginia Graphite Company. The mine consists of an adit, 30 m long, and four pits, the largest measuring 12 m by 23 m and 30 m deep.

Beware of possible animals living in caves.

Greenmantle Mineral Tours

Greenmantle is over 300 acres of land that has not been greatly altered since the last ice age.

It contains the rare mineral fluororicherite, in its only known location in Canada.  It is also home to apatite, hornblende, orthoclase, quartz, clinohumite and more. Mineral specimens from Greenmantle are now in the ROM, the Museum of Nature in Ottawa, the Smithsonian, and in private collections around the world.

The Bramham family offers guided eco-tours of their mineral occurrence.

Esson Creek Maple

A state-of-the-art tubing system, reverse osmosis, and a wood-fired evaporator create some of the best-tasting maple syrup.

There are over 2,200 maple syrup taps in this untouched forest.

The Sugarhouse is always open. During the Syrup season (mid-March to mid-April), it is in full production, and there is always something exciting to see.
