Northern Ontario Railroad Museum

Established around 1982, when a bunch of volunteers formed a committee to preserve the town’s history, the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum & Heritage Centre does precisely that. The Capreol town was formed around a rail station, thus making railways important when talking about how the Capreol town came to be.

The museum consists of two buildings and a small park to explore. The first is the house museum building, built in 1916, the oldest surviving community home in Capreol and takes you through a journey of exhibits of the town’s mining history. The exhibitions in the old museum building include photographs, old items and tools. The second building is the heritage Centre, the former Municipal Building of the Capreol Fire and Police departments, which tells the town’s political and sports history.

Lastly, Prescot park is a beautiful park filled with a small pond, garden, and some of the coolest vintage railways you have to see, such as the #55208 and #7923. For some train lovers, these railways are the only reason they visit the museum in the first place. Even with just fantastic exhibits and artifacts, the museum has many fun activities and events happening all year round.

This museum is a must-see in the town of Capreol!

Home Town of Doug Mohns

Douglas Allen “Diesel” Mohns played 22 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1953–54 until 1974–75. Mohns twice won the most coveted prize in junior hockey, the Memorial Cup. He.

Doug Mohns was born in 1933 and grew up in Capreol, where railway culture and hockey were the kings of time well spent. He would earn the nickname “Diesel” out of respect for how his piston-like legs could penetrate the ice and propel him forward like a locomotive.

Mohns joined the Boston Bruins in 1953, playing for 11 seasons.

Isolated from the town, Greens Lake Rapids is a place to visit for the scenic view of the rapids. A great place to catch trout fish, but at your own risk.

Ella Lake Park

Named after the Bell Brothers, Ella Lake Park is a beautiful small, quiet campground and lake. The story goes that one day the Bell brothers, one of the companies that were cutting timber in the area during 1914, came across the view of the lake sounded by the birch trees. The brothers found the lake so beautiful, with one yelling, ” This is a beautiful ‘Yella’ lake,” thus giving the name “Ella.”

The campground is a camp lovers’ dream with 16 comp sites, a canteen, showers, portable bathroom and hydro services. A park is a great place to canoe, swim and just relax to watch the beautiful view.

The Station 18 Fire House Bar and Grill

Opened by Owner Justin Seguin, a man who comes from a line of family-owned bars and grills, the Station 18 Fire House Bar and Grill is a place to see and experience yourself. The bar and grill have many different food items that residents love, such as burgers with their special mayo sauce, fries, pizza, poutine and just all the greasy goodness of food that everyone loves. It is a loved bar by residents, a place for them to relax and socialize.

The grill and bar host many social events throughout the year, sometimes inviting bands and singers to play at the bar. Or hosting community events with other organizations and clubs. If you want to experience Capreol’s local life and interact with residents in a social setting, Station 18 Fire House Bar and Grill is probably the place to visit.
