Home Town of Tim Horton

Miles Gilbert “Tim” Horton was a professional hockey player, a defenceman for 24 seasons in the National Hockey League.

He was born in Cochrane in 1930.

Horton was one of the best defensemen from the National Hockey League’s Original Six Era and spent most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Also a successful businessman, Horton co-founded the Tim Hortons restaurant chain. In 1964 Horton established a little coffee and donut shop in Hamilton, Ontario, selling coffee for a quarter and featuring his creations, the apple fritter and the Dutchie.

The shop was an enormous success. In 1967 Horton entered a franchise partnership with Ron Joyce.

Tragical Death of Leafs Defenceman Bill Barilko

The short, remarkable life of Leaf’s defenceman William “Bashin’ Bill” Barilko, ended in tragedy just weeks after he became a team’s hero.

Barilko was of Ukrainian descent.

In 1947 Bill Barilko was called up to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his just five NHL seasons, he won four Stanley Cups (1947, 1948, 1949, 1951), scoring arguably the most dramatic Stanley Cup-winning goal. In 1951, the Toronto-Montreal finals were the closest ever, with all five games going into overtime. It was Barilko who scored the winner in that deciding game, the hero for a city and country.

He died the same year in an air crash near Cochrane.

New Post Falls

New Post Falls, a few kilometres north of Cochrane, offers visitors a breathtaking vista, a towering gorge, and the sights and sounds of the roaring water as it plunges into a pool far below.

Because of the narrow gorge, the falls give off a great deal of mist. Visiting here feels almost surreal and otherworldly.
