Frank Slide

Tragedy struck in 1903 when approximately 44 million cubic meters or 110 million tonnes of limestone from Turtle Mountain, a massive rockslide, buried most of the mining town of Frank.

The Frank Slide in 1903

Travelling through Frank today, you can still see the destruction left by the mountain slide, which has now become a historical site within Alberta. A must-see when going through Crowsnest Pass.

Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site

Located 6 minutes outside Frank, the Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site is a great place to stop and learn some history of the past coal mining community in the Crowsnest Pass.

This Canadian-owned and operated mining venture abandoned due to the effects of World War 1 and then again in World War 2, among other things, is a perfect window into what was an ambitious endeavour.
