History

The Musée de la gare is a cultural hub that disseminates, preserves and revives the tangible and intangible heritage of the Town of Temiscaming. Based on the principles of participatory museology and cultural activity as a mediation tool, the Museum’s activities aim to make known the depth and richness of its history, encourage its appropriation by the local population and ensure its transmission to future generations. The Musée de la gare works to transmit the tenacity, uniqueness and visionary thinking that were the founding values still perceptible today in Temiscaming and represented by the symbol that is the railway station.

Originally, the train station was the central point of the Temiscaming community’s development activities; it was where people met and exchanged. This essential building was at the heart of the economic and social life of the community, as the railroad was, for several decades, the main means of communication with the outside world. The station was built in the Georgian style, an architecture only found in Temiscaming at the former Bank of Montreal building. It is the only station in Canada to be made in the Georgian style. It also has the particularity of housing, in its basement, one of the bunkers built during the Cold War. It is the first Quebec station to be recognized as a cultural property.

Stop by this fascinating museum and experience Témiscaming’s rich heritage!
