The New Dundee Emporium

The New Dundee Emporium is a store housing a boutique, grocery store, and high tea restaurant. The building was built in 1887 to honour Queen Victoria and has gone through many hands before coming to the current owners, Mark Harrison and Danny Duchesne.

The building retains many of its original features, including the store bins, flooring, lighting fixtures, and the Victorian-style front door. The owners have also preserved the mercantile bill that has announced the entering of customers throughout the life of the store. In the store, you can shop for groceries, explore their women’s boutique, or schedule a high tea prepared by owner and chef Danny Duchesne!

Fish Fry

September

The New Dundee community holds Fish Fry each year in September. The event takes place at the New Dundee Community Centre.

This is, without a doubt, New Dundee’s most popular event. Bring your appetite and fill up delicious, lightly battered fish and crispy homemade fries. The meal is accompanied by a selection of salads and desserts.

Home Town of William John Wintemberg

New Dundee is the birthplace of William Wintemberg, an uneducated blacksmith’s son who would become the leading voice in Canadian archaeology. Born May 18, 1876, Wintemberg was pushed by his father to begin apprenticing as a tailor.

However, at 16 years old, tired of this job, he ran away to Toronto. Here he worked as a printer, then a coppersmith, and finally a helper at the Ontario Provincial Museum. Here his love for archaeology became apparent, and he was eventually appointed assistant to the chief archaeologist of the Royal Victoria Museum, Ottawa.

Wintemberg was most interested in indigenous archaeology and published seventy-five articles and pamphlets as well as his books, ‘Folklore of Waterloo County’ and ‘Distinguishing Characteristics of Algonkian Iroquoian Cultures.’ He was elected Fellow of the Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada in 1934.

Dundee Arts Collective

Recently opened in New Dundee is the Dundee Arts Collective, a gallery, retail shop and studio space opened by Jenny Miller and Kate Cox to bring artists together and showcase local art. The Collective features unique artists, such as Patti Moses, whose showcased collection diverges from traditional paintings and sketches and focuses on textile arts. Some of the art from her collection, like pillows and heated neck wraps, have been available for sale at the collective. The collective also hosts art classes, including a felted fibre art class and a pottery class.

A recent and very cool addition to the collective is their art vending machine set up outside their studio. If you don’t have time to go inside, you can pick up take-home art kits and small pieces from their vending machine and continue on your way!
