Thinker’s Lodge

National Historic Site

Thinker’s Lodge is the location of the first-ever Pugwash Conferences of Science and World Affairs in 1957. At this meeting, the owner, Cyrus Eaton, hosted 22 scientists from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain and discussed the threat of nuclear weapons.

This conference, in addition to Joseph Rotblat’s efforts to prevent nuclear war, was awarded the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel is displayed at the Thinker’s Lodge. Certainly, a must-see for any history buff.

The Lodge is open from June through August and by appointment.

Dinghy Beach

Small swimming area by the Pugwash wharf, open to the public. There are no lifeguards here, so swim at your own risk. The drop-off is quick, especially closer to the wharf, but it’s a great swimming spot because there are few rocks or seaweed.

Conveniently, there’s a paved parking lot beside the beach and a public boat launch.

Inn the Elms: B&B

A personal favourite, Inn the Elms is a family-run restaurant and bed & breakfast serving more than the average diner food you’d expect from other local restaurants. From Atlantic salmon to N.Y. strip steak, they’ll surely have something that interests your palate.

I highly recommend sticking around for dessert as well.

Pugwash Farmer’s Market

The Pugwash Farmer’s Market is held on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm from May to October.

There are over 40 regular vendors with a wide variety of products, from homegrown veggies to handmade quilts. Several vendors have tasty treats like pastries, maple syrup, honey products, and ciders. The Farmer’s Market is a great opportunity to experience the small-town culture and shop locally.

Gulf Shore Provincial Park

The Gulf Shore Provincial Park is a public area with picnic tables (some sheltered) and a short stroll to the beach. It’s a great spot to take advantage of the warm waters on the East Coast. Not too rocky, with large sandbars at low tide, it’s the perfect place for a little walk with the dogs or an all-day excursion.
