Home Town of Canada’s 1st Olympic Champion

George Washington Orton was a middle-distance runner. In 1900, he became Canada’s first Olympic gold medal winner. He won gold in the 2500m steeplechase and bronze in the 400m hurdles at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris.

Born in Strathroy, Ontario, Orton was paralyzed when he fell out of a tree as a child. He regained his mobility at age twelve only.

Orton’s total number of wins was reported to be 121.

 

He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.

Home Towns of Actor Alexander Knox

Alexander Knox was an actor and author of adventure novels set in the Great Lakes area during the 19th century.

He was born in Strathroy in 1907. Alexander Knox was educated at the University of Western Ontario and first appeared on the American stage with the Boston Repertory Theatre in 1929.

In the 1930s, he moved to London, England, where he appeared in several films.

His English films include a small part in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice (1967).

Home Town of Arthur Currie

General Sir Arthur William Currie was one of the finest commanders in Canadian military history. He commanded the Canadian Corps during World War I, from June 1917 until its disbandment in late 1919.

He was born in 1875 at a farm near Strathroy.

Museum Strathroy-Caradoc

The Museum Strathroy-Caradoc has a variety of exhibitions available free of charge to the general public. The calendar for their exhibitions can be found on their website. This museum also holds collections of artwork, military and sports artifacts, clothing, photographs, and more dating back to early settlement in the 1830s.

Strathroy Conservation Area

The Strathroy Conservation Area has a 3 km long trail that connects with other parks and wetlands. The quiet trail is within a floodplain forest where efforts for reforestation were done by the conservation authority. These efforts allow visitors to experience seeing wildlife while following the path.

Trout-Haven Park

If you’re planning a camping trip with your friends or family, Trout-Haven Park is a great place to set up for a lovely quiet weekend. RVs and trailers have accessible areas for parking. Tent sites have nearby washrooms, showers, electricity, and firepits. Cabins are also available for rental if you prefer sleeping in a bed. The park also has a rainbow trout pond for fishers with equipment available for rent.

The Strathroy Hometown Festival is an annual summertime event that has a history of over 40 years. It includes carnival games, ice cream, cotton candy, live music, and many other attractions. Featured events include a show and shine car show, karaoke, and a vendor’s alley. This event usually takes place in the month of June.
