Nikola Tesla Statue

Nikola Tesla designed the first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls which started producing electrical power in 1895. This was the beginning of electrification.

Overlooking the majestic Horseshoe Falls at Queen Victoria Park is the statue of the brilliant man, a Serbian-American scientist.

As a boy, Tesla saw a picture of Niagara Falls and told his uncle in Lika, Croatia, that he wanted to put a wheel under the falls to harness the power of the moving water.

Tesla Monument at Niagara Falls unveiled on July 9, 2006. Tesla is standing atop an AC motor (alternating current electricity supply system), one of the 700 inventions he patented.

Niagara Parkway

The Niagara Parkway, formerly known as Niagara Boulevard and historically as the Niagara Road, is a scenic drive running parallel to the Niagara River 55 km from Fort Erie in the south, to Niagara-on-the-Lake in the north. The parkway is one of the oldest in Ontario. Construction of the Niagara Parkway began in 1908 and was completed in 1931.

When British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill visited Niagara Falls in 1943 and he is quoted as saying

the Niagara Parkway is the “prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world.”

King George VI Statue

King George VI, Queen Elizabeth’s father’s visit to Niagara, is commemorated very nicely by this statue. It shows him in full regalia and is very impressive. It was a good, quick stop to have a look while we were driving on the Niagara Parkway.

Rainbow Bridge

The Niagara Falls International Rainbow Bridge, commonly known as the Rainbow Bridge, is an arch bridge across the Niagara River gorge. It connects the cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and Niagara Falls, New York, United States.

In November 1941, the official opening of the Rainbow Bridge took place. It was built near the site of the earlier Honeymoon Bridge, which collapsed in 1938 due to an ice jam in the river.

Floral Clock

Travel along the Niagara Parkway towards Niagara-on-the-Lake to visit the famous Floral Clock, located north of the Botanical Gardens. The intricate designs on the face of the Floral Clock are created with up to 16,000 carpet bedding plants and are changed twice each year.

The tower at the back of the clock houses Westminster chimes that greet each quarter-hour.

Whirlpool Aero Car

Designed by a renowned Spanish engineer, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, the Whirlpool Aero Car has been soaring the Niagara Gorge since 1916. The antique cable car is suspended from six sturdy cables and offers spectacular views of the swirling Niagara Whirlpool and the Class 6 whitewater rapids of the Niagara River.

Although the Whirlpool Aero Car travels between two points on the Canadian shore, riders of this historic cable car actually cross the international borderline between Canada and the United States a total of four times each trip due to the way the river elbows.
