Dakota Dunes Casino

Just 20 minutes outside the nearest city, Saskatoon, this is the only casino in the area. With shuttles heading out to Whitecap from the town and a large parking lot, there are several ways to get to the entertainment.  The casino features a restaurant and a high-limit room and often hosts concerts and events. Like most casinos, alcohol is served; therefore, the establishment is 19+ by local laws.  This Casino is managed by Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority.

Dakota Dunes Golf Course

Set in the beautiful Saskatchewan prairie, this 18-hole golf course was designed by Graham Crooke and is a marvel of natural beauty suitable for all levels of golfers. The course includes a stunning clubhouse with a bookable restaurant, a well-equipped pro shop and a spacious deck overlooking the golf course. This seasonal attraction operates from late April to early October, weather permitting.

Dakota Dunes Hotel and Convention Center

With first nations culture and values at the front of what they do, the Dakota Dunes Resort has 155 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Saskatchewan River basin and area. Guests can enjoy many amenities, including cultural demonstrations, a rooftop pool, a fitness center, a world-class restaurant featuring local delicacies and a gift shop run by Wanuskewin, a local indigenous cultural site. It is the only full-service resort in the area. The hotel also features bookable meeting, conference, and wedding spaces.

Whitecap Dakota Powwow

This annual experience happens in August and is hosted by the Dakota Dunes Casino. These all-ages events last approximately three days and feature vendors and traditional first nation dancing and songs. This event is held at the Whitecap Sports grounds. Everyone is welcome. Camping is available onsite, or guests can stay at the resort. No drugs or alcohol are allowed, and tobacco smoking is permitted.

Chief Whitecap Waterway

Starting at one of the many boat launches along the South Saskatchewan River, this route can only be accessed by water. The river will take travellers over 100km to many locations, including Whitecap Dakota first nation and the Gardiner Dam. Travellers will enjoy natural flora and fauna along the way and can take breaks from the water to enjoy hiking and camping locations.

Dakota Dunes Resort

Based out of the Dakota Dunes Resort, visitors to Whitecap can experience many activities.

Summer Adventures

  • E-bikes, fishing tours, wagon rides, tipi demonstrations and indigenous games demonstrations

 

For 25$ an hour, visitors can book an e-bike to take a self-guided tour around the area and experience the Saskatchewan river basin from a different angle.

Fishing tours are offered by Fishinggeek, who provide all the equipment and training for a fishing adventure.

Wagon rides are the perfect option for those with limited mobility to explore the Saskatchewan River valley.

In the indigenous games demonstration, participants will get a chance to learn and experience traditional games played by first nations people of the area.

 

Winter adventures

  • Sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.

The sleigh ride can accommodate up to 8 people in a tour around the Saskatchewan River valley. This hour-long experience is ideal for people with limited mobility to see the area.

Snowshoes and cross-country skies can be rented from the resort, and your own can be brought.

The ice fishing is hosted by fishing geeks who provide all the equipment and an experienced angler for either a half-day or full-day ice fishing adventure.

 

Cultural adventures

Enjoy traditional stories and warm feelings with the Bannock and Bonfire experience. During this, visitors will learn about Dakota tradition, the history of the area, and its people.

In a pow-wow dance presentation, visitors will experience a dance demonstration and interpretation.

Bird Watching

The bird-watching tour takes visitors to a local nature conservation area to view the many birds that inhabit the plains. This is a guided experience with a knowledgeable tour guide. Guests can see many seasonal birds, including the dancing grouse of spring and the snowy owls of the winter. Saskatchewan is known for being the land of the living skies, and the diverse range of birds found around Whitecap is certainly part of it.
