Home Town of Donald Sutherland

Donald McNichol Sutherland was one of Canada’s most respected, prolific, and versatile character actors.

Donald spent his teenage years in Bridgewater. As a teenager, at age 14, Sutherland started in CKBW radio station in Bridgewater as a news correspondent and disc jockey.

Donald Sutherland has been in the film industry for six decades and has been in about 200 films and shows. He has won two Golden Globe Awards and has been nominated for eight.

The Main Street of the South Shore

Bridgewater has a reputation as the Main Street of the South Shore. On the west side, the traditional King Street shopping district is home to locally owned shops, restaurants, and services.

Annual events, including the South Shore  Exhibition, Afterglow Art Festival, South Shore in Motion, Canada Day on the LaHave River, and Christmas on the LaHave, provide spectacle and a taste of Lunenburg County for all.

Wile Carding Mill Museum

You can find this water-powered mill in the heart of Bridgewater in the Wile Carding Mill Museum. This machine revolutionized carding by preparing wool from loads of sheep fleece.

This museum includes the Heritage Gallery and an exhibit of arts and community, an extraordinary collection of natural history and growth around Bridgewater and Lunenburg County. A great place to learn about the history of wool and the machinery process.

Woodland Gardens Park & Duck Pond

Woodlands Gardens Park consists of a duck pond, man-made wooden waterfalls, a playground and many trails. It is a perfect place to go for some fresh air and relaxation. Also, it is a great place to view wildlife as this area’s habitat is very diverse.

You can find turtles, a variety of frogs, birds, muskrats, squirrels and many more. Some trails connect the neighbourhood areas and are accessible for hiking and biking. It is a great place to enjoy nature trails, ponds, and man-made amenities.

DesBrisay Museum

Desbrisay Museum is free of charge and can be visited all year round. The museum is located in Woodland Gardens and can be accessed through the trails. DesBrisay Museum was started in 1860 for artifacts collection by Mather Byles Desbrisay.

The museum has added more artifacts and historical objects that represent the heritage of Bridgewater and Lunenburg County. It has exhibits, workshops, and special events that are offered all year long to expand the knowledge of the heritage and culture of Bridgewater. It also has a gift shop with local history books, giftware and artistic pieces from local artists.

King Street Court Park

King Street Court Park is located on King Street, as the name suggests, in the heart of Bridgewater. The park is beautiful, overlooking the LaHave River.

The park has a playground, garden, bandstand, bleachers built into the river bank, picnic tables and benches, and a floating dock. It is wheelchair accessible, and all ages can enjoy something here. It is a great place to enjoy a picnic and see the beautiful view for relaxation.

King Street Beer Company

King Street Beer Company is located in downtown Bridgewater. They have locally crafted beers and ciders. It is a huge place with a patio to enjoy beer and cider with friends. They also serve non-alcoholic beverages.

You can also enjoy crafting beer and ciders. It also has music and allows dogs on the patio. It is a great place to hang out with friends.

Pijinuiskaq Park

Pijinuiskaq Park (pronounced BE-JN-OO-IS-GAH) recently opened in 2017 and is located in the downtown area of Bridgewater. The name “Pijinuiskaq” is the traditional Mi’kmaw name for the LaHave River, which means “having long joints or branches.”

The park also has an interpretive panel and art installed in 2022 that was created by Mi’kmaw artist. It is a great park to enjoy your leisure time downtown.

Home Town of First Lady Of Country Music Carroll Baker

Carroll Anne Baker is a country music singer and songwriter. Known as Canada’s First Lady Of Country Music, she released many chart-topping single country hits in the 1970s-80s.

Carroll was born in Bridgewater in 1949. She attended elementary school in Port Medway and Mill Village and high school in Liverpool.

Her first Top 10 record came in 1973 from the “Ten Little Fingers,” a song about a little girl written by Don Grashey; this song remains one of her most popular songs to this day.

Shipyards Landing Bridgewater

The shipyard’s landing was created in 1998. This place is for a boat ramp and public shipload and unloads zone. The shipyard’s landing also has green space for concerts and summer outdoor events. It is also used as a picnic space as it overlooks the beautiful LaHave River.

You can also enjoy boating, kayaking, canoeing, and power boating at the LaHave River. It is a great place to go boating, for an event, or to observe a nice beautiful view of the river.
