Gaspésie Museum

Open year-round, the Gaspésie Museum or Musée de la Gaspésie houses the history of the vibrant peninsula and Magazine Gaspésie, Québec’s oldest history magazine, all under one roof. With many permanent and rotating exhibitions, the site is the perfect place for families to visit and dive into the evolution of this town. Where The Worlds Meet, a permanent exhibition opened to the public in 2021, displays the peninsula coming to life over 380 million years.

The museum also houses the Jacques Cartier Monument, a replica of the cross he erected in 1534, a gift shop selling local products and an archives center.

Christ the King Cathedral

Recognized as a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture and Communications of Quebec, the Cathedral of Christ the King is an architectural wonder. Built in 1969 on a crypt dating back to 1934, the red cedar wood-clad exterior and modern design make this architecturally unusual cathedral. It is also North America’s only wooden cathedral. The church has a presbytery connected to the main prayer area, which has typical elements of a church, including an altar, a choir area, candle areas and statue areas. Visitors are also allowed into the basement on certain days. Located on a hill facing the bay of Gaspé, this cathedral is a must-see!

Cross of Gaspé

Carved from a block of gray granite extracted from the Auguste Dumas quarry, the Cross of GaspĂ© is a historical monument. This monolithic granite cross was commissioned and installed by the Canadian government in 1934 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of French explorers in Canada. An original Cross of GaspĂ© was erected by Jacques Cartier during his first trip to the Gulf of St. Lawrence on July 24, 1534, to mark the possession of the territory on behalf of the King of France, Francis I. When this cross was made, it was tough to extract and transport this heavy rock. A plaque was unveiled on the 75th anniversary of the erection of the granite cross in 2009 to commemorate the artisans’ efforts. The location of this cross has changed thrice since its unveiling but has sat in the same spot since 2012.

Saint-Jean River

Known for its emerald green flowing waters and dry fly fishing, the Saint-Jean River is located at the eastern tip of the Gaspé Peninsula. The 121 km long river flows from the Monts Chic-Chocs into Gaspé Bay at Douglastown. The river is divided into four sections, one private and three limited access sectors. Both wade fishing and canoe fishing are offered in the three limited access sectors. The fourth private sector within a wildlife reserve houses the famous Pavillon Saint-Jean Lodge, providing anglers with world-class fishing experiences for over 150 years.

The fishing period starts in May and ends in September every year. The catch and release period for large salmon starts at the end of May and lasts until the end of July, while the catch and retention period for large salmon is from the start of August to the end of September. Two of the four sectors are required to be guided, but the other two are guide-optional. Ranked among Quebec’s top ten salmon rivers, this site is a must-visit for a memorable visit.
