Swallowtail Lighthouse

Located in the Bay of Fundy is the Swallowtail Lighthouse, the first lighthouse built on Grand Manan Island. The Swallowtail Lighthouse is still used to help navigate those travelling through the bay but is also recognized as one of the main attractions on Grand Manan Island.

The Swallowtail Lighthouse is not only a beautiful sight to see but also provides a fantastic view of the bay. The goal of this lighthouse is to ensure that they preserve the significant history attached to it. The guides serve to educate all visitors about the history of this lighthouse and its surrounding environment. There is also a lovely picnic area next to the lighthouse so that you can end your visit with a picnic on the beach.

Home Town of Willa Cather

Willa Sibert Cather was a writer awarded 1923 the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours, a novel set during World War I.

At the age of 33, she moved to New York City, her primary home for the rest of her life, though she also travelled widely and spent considerable time at her summer residence in New Brunswick. Beginning in 1922, Cather spent summers on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, where she bought a cottage in Whale Cove on the Bay of Fundy where her penultimate short story, “Before Breakfast,” is set. It was the only house she ever owned.

When visiting Grand Manan, don’t miss Willa Cather Cottage. It is located on the bank overlooking Whale Cove and is the most private and the closest to the water. You can rent the cottage.
