Southampton Board Walk

Southampton Boardwalk has been around for 100 years. It is a long boardwalk that stretches across Lake Huron with views of Chantry Island and the Imperial Lighthouse. There are several spots to rest on the beach so you can enjoy the warm summer days, and kids can spend their time at one of the many playgrounds along the way.

The boardwalk spans along the edge of the Southampton beach from Millard/High Street to the Long Dock area. This is a great spot for the young and old to spend a nice summer day and witness beautiful sunsets. There are washrooms, free parking and restaurants along the way.

Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre

This great museum is open year-round, offering special events, concerts, education programs and children, adult and family programming. Be sure to check the website for entry rates and timings. The museum features many exhibits, such as “Bruce Remembers,” which is the story of the 160th Bruce Battalion from World War 1.

You can experience life in the trenches and try on soldier’s uniforms and gas masks worn in World War 1. Another exhibit called “Riding the Rails” takes you to when the railway stretched through Bruce Country to the Huron shoreline. Overall, the exhibits are family, friends and interactive, so people of all ages can participate and enjoy them! The Museum opened in 1955 and has undergone several transformations and updates.

Fairy Lake Trail

This is a beautiful and relaxing walking trail for couples, friends and parents with children. A natural trail surrounds the perimeter while a fountain splashes at the lake’s center. The trail is open all year and offers different views as the season changes. But be sure to add this to your fall itinerary because you don’t want to miss out on the leaves as they change colours!

Sometimes concerts are also held by this lake in the summer, so watch out for that. You can find plenty of wildlife as you look into the lake, with lots of big carp, swans, ducks and geese roaming around. You can also feed the geese and ducks using the corn dispensing machines found along the lake’s edge. After a long relaxing hike/walk, you can head to the many food and dining areas to grab a quick bite.

Chantry Island Lighthouse Tour

If you want to see some beautiful lake views on a clear day, you should head to the chantry island lighthouse! It is located on Lake Huron, over a mile southwest of the Saugeen River mouth in Southampton.

This lighthouse has much history and was built in the mid-1800s. The island has stones above and beneath the water, going a mile north and south of the island. As a result, these boulders make this a very dangerous place on the Great Lake and one where lots of shipwrecks take place. Since it is an island, the size of the land depends on the water levels surrounding it. You can tour this lighthouse and the Light Keeper’s Cottage while climbing up 106 steps to the top of the lighthouse to see the stunning views of Lake Huron.

If you’re a bird enthusiast, this island might be perfect for you! It is a Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary with approximately 50,000 birds on the island during the breeding season. Please bring along your kids and enjoy the beautiful island and all that it has to offer!

Pioneer Park

North of the flag in Southampton, the beach is accessible to the public. It tends to be rockier and stonier here both on shore and in the water, but it’s a beautiful walk along the water to the mouth of the Saugeen River which empties into Lake Huron.

Watch the sunset or have a picnic at Pioneer Park located right at the river mouth.
