Sun Peaks Ski Hill

The heart of this alpine community is, of course, the ski hill at Sunpeaks Resort. It is the second-largest ski area in Canada, boasting 4,270 acres of skiing trails across three mountains. There are trails to accommodate skiers and snowboarders of every level, whether you are searching for terrain parks, steep slopes, or leisurely runs to take in the panoramic wintery views. If you’re looking for alternative ways to get out on the Wintery slopes, Sun Peak offers other experiences, such as nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and tubing.

During the summer months, Sun Peaks is still a popular destination for mountain hiking and biking. There are a variety of trails that allow you to take in scenic views, bright sunshine, and alpine blossoms. The sun peaks bike park has numerous lift-access downhill trails, with recent additions made in 2022, offering variety and quality that is difficult to find anywhere else.

Sun Peaks Village

Cradled in the valley between these three mountains is the sweet European-style ski village. This area contains cozy accommodations, quaint shops, and countless eateries. No trip to a Canadian ski village is complete without a visit to the Rocky Mountian Chocolate Factory. It’s also a great place to pick up new gear or find rentals. Boclacco Cafe is the local choice for a morning coffee and a light meal. If your looking for a more rowdy restaurant, then Bottoms bar and grill is the popular apres bar on the mountain. The Sun Peaks Village is also the hub for many special events running annually.  This village is sure to have just what you are looking for.

Franziskus Chapel

This adorable mid-mountain chapel looks as if it belongs in a fairytale. It was constructed in 1999 by the owner of Sun Peaks Resort, Peter Stumboeck. The Chapel was named after, and devoted to,  his late friend Franz Brandsetter. The name also invokes the German monk Saint Franziskus who was a patron of animals.

Throughout the Chaple are the works of Bavarian painter Rudi Schmid. The bell that chimes above the chapel entrance was also brought in from Bavaria. During the ski season, the chapel hosts Sunday Mass, Christmas, and Easter services. It is also used year-round for weddings. This enchanting chapel is an intriguing stop on your way down the slopes.

Sun Peaks Mountain Cross Carts

The Mountain Cross Cart Experience at Sun Peaks resort will get your heart pumping as you swerve the downhill track at surprising speeds. Constructed in 2015, the track at Sun Peaks became the first operator of Mountain Cross Carts in North America.

These small carts are designed to have a low center of gravity, allowing them to speed downhill courses with ample safety and control. This adrenaline-inducing experience was a huge hit when it opened, following the popularity of similar courses in resorts in Sweden, Norway, Estonia, and Finland. It is a great way to add some thrill, and competition, to a sunny summer day on the mountain.

McGillivray Lake

This small pristine lake is a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon connecting to nature. It’s peaceful to float along the surface on paddleboards, kayaks, or canoes. You can bring your own or rent them from the nearby Sun Peaks Resort. The higher elevation of the lake makes it a popular fishing spot in late summer, as it is teeming with rainbow trout. Trails looping around the lake are often used by both hikers and bikers.

A few camping units are available that are suitable for both tents and travel trailers. It should be advised that these are user-maintained campsites with limited amenities and no cell coverage. In the winter month, the lake can be enjoyed as a location for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The lake can be accessed via a marked service road off Sun Peaks Road.
