Turner Valley Gas Plant

The Turner Valley Gas Plant is the first commercial oilfield and processing plant in Western Canada. Open on the weekends from May to September, explore the birthplace of Alberta’s petroleum history by taking a guided tour around the buildings and equipment that reflect the history and evolution of natural gas processing.

This plant was first built after natural gas sprayed out of the well bore at Dingman No. 1 in Turner Valley on May 14, 1914. The Turner Valley Gas Plant was one of Canada’s most significant petroleum processing facilities until it closed in 1985. Today, you can tour the site, exhibit hall, and some historic buildings.

Eau Claire Distillery

Established in 2013, Eau Claire Distillery is the first of the independent craft distilleries in Turner Valley. While its start is relatively recent, the distillery has rich connections to Alberta’s liquor history. It is in a 1929 movie theatre along a street known as ‘Whiskey Row’ during Prohibition in the 1920s. This area was the core of Alberta’s liquor history, where determined drinkers set up whisky stills on nearby ranches and a thriving market of speakeasies, illegal whisky trade, and illicit activities.

Today, Eau Claire is open for retail sales and offers a limited but splendid menu of craft cocktails and food. Each small batch of liquor produced is hand-crafted for perfection from farm to glass.

Fahr Brewery

If beer is your thing, then Fahr Brewery is your place to go. Get the opportunity to taste authentic German beer in Alberta and not have to fly across the ocean for it.

The brewery’s owner, Jochen Fahr, was born and raised in Ebringen, Germany. His father worked at the Fürstenberg Brewery in Donaueschingen, which sparked Jochen’s interest and passion for brewing at a young age. For his undergraduate studies, Jochen focused on industrial engineering and biotechnology using microorganisms (e.g., yeast, bacteria) for industrial processes such as ethanol production. Today, he has been able to put his professional experience in business, science, and engineering to create an automated brewing system that has helped him win several medals in home brewing competitions.
