Saint-Simeon Ferry

From early April to early January

This ferry travels from Rivière-du-Loup to Saint-Siméon, lasting approximately 65 minutes on the gorgeous blue waters of the Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence). Visitors can experience the refreshing winds on the water and witness many marine animals, including whales and belugas! The ferry is fairly large since it can hold about 400 passengers and 100 vehicles. Additionally, the fares for the passengers and their vehicles are quite affordable and extensive.

People who simply want to take a one-day round trip can do a reasonable price. Come journey aboard the Saint-Simeon Ferry, and make sure to have your sea legs ready for the trip!

Parc des Chutes

This local park is over 10 km of wooded forest trails along the Rivière du Loup and a beautiful heritage orchard near the downtown area. It is famous for its breathtaking 33-metre waterfall, and there is also an old power station that still functions to this day. The park is easily accessible by taking the Passerelle Frontenac and rue Lafontaine to get near the waterfall or simply by taking rue Hélène. There are a total of 8 walking trails, varying from beginner to intermediate difficulties. Furthermore, guests can train their muscles through the diverse paths or engage in birdwatching.

 

The paths are home to many ecosystems, and the forest trails have quite a few clearings, wetlands, ponds, and much more for you to discover! You will also discover many undergrowth plants, flora and fauna abound in their natural habitat. If you stop by the renowned orchard, you will find many rows of apple trees and steep banks going toward the river. The park is adorned by many informative panels along the way, with two bridges near the waterfall. Whether you want to simply go sightseeing or immerse yourself in nature by walking the trails, Parc des Chutes is a must-see in Rivière-du-Loup!

Parc de la Pointe

Another beautiful park near Rivière-du-Loup with access to the riverbanks of Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence). It is renowned as being one of the best places to watch the sunset, which can be admired from the seashore. The park has many walking and hiking trails, a 10 km cycling road, play areas, and many lookout points. Visitors can occasionally observe belugas and seals near the docks, while the migrating geese sometimes stop by in the spring and fall seasons.

Some of the activities that can be done at this park include boat excursions, a 5 km hiking trail with informative panels, sea mammal observation, and much more. Meanwhile, a few amenities at the park include a boutique, camping accommodations, a boat ramp, picnic tables, a snack bar, etc. The park is known to be pet friendly and will host events throughout the year. Drop by Parc de la Pointe to admire the spectacular sunset from one of the lookouts and engage in fun activities with your travelling companions!

Île aux Lièvres

From early June to late September

This 13 km island is located on the Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence) River and is home to many walking and hiking trails of varying difficulties, with forests abundant in bird life. There is a 12-passenger boat known as Le Petit Lièvre that can take visitors to the island in 20 minutes. Tours are offered in English and French for guests to enjoy and learn more about the local area. Many people observe the wildlife, from the belugas near the water shores to the various bird species in the forest area.

The island takes its name from the hares that lived on the island for many long years and has changed the environment on the garden path. An interpretation center can teach you more about the island’s history, which was once occupied by humans. Several amenities are found for guests, such as a restaurant, picnic tables, a camping site, and much more. There is much to discover on l’Île aux Lièvres and many sights to admire. Experience the island for yourself and feast your eyes on the picturesque landscape!

Parc de la Croix

This lovely park is on top of a hill, with an altitude of about 500 m above the ground. The park is easily accessible for visitors, and it is located near Parc des Chutes. It is famous for the enormous cross that sits atop the hill. Since the park is near the downtown area, visitors have an incredible view of the whole town and the islands nearby. The cross is illuminated at night, and its glowing light shines above the city, similarly to a lighthouse at sea. There are various park resting areas, observation decks, and a memorial to a local journalist. Additionally, guests can admire the fauna and flora of the local region from up high. It is worth enjoying the amazing landscape from the hill, especially at night, to see the cross in all its beauty!

Parc Côtier Kiskotuk

This gorgeous nature park spans 30 km long, where you can observe the breathtaking scenery filled with great biodiversity. You can escape your daily life by immersing yourself in the mountains and marshes, along with the many farms and fields of the region. The Parc Côtier Kiskotuk is divided into seven areas where you can discover several municipalities. Some of these areas include Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs and l’Isle Verte.

Several outdoor activities are offered at the park, such as hiking and biking trails, birdwatching and wildlife observation, mud trails, heritage tours, and much more! Additionally, visitors can spend the night camping or stay on-site in one of the cabins. You can find exhibits and guided tours to learn more about the local wildlife and flora, along with the environment’s rich First Nations culture. Phare du Pot à l’Eau-de-Vie

The Pot à l’Eau-de-Vie (Pot island) is an archipelago located on the Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence) and near l’île aux Lièvres. It takes about 20 minutes to reach it by boat, and visitors are given a guided boat tour around the island. This beautiful island is brimming with wildlife, from marine animals to bird species. Furthermore, this area features a gorgeous landscape perfect for watching the sunset.

It is famous for its red and white Lighthouse, which was built in 1857 but abandoned in 1964. It was eventually restored in 1989, turning the lighthouse into a historical building. Despite being considered a heritage monument, it has been renovated into an inn for guests wanting to stay on the island overnight. The staff is quite friendly, and the atmosphere is very welcoming to all. This is the perfect getaway for those who want to escape into nature and have a splendid time with their loved ones!

Manoir Fraser

From June to September

This beautiful manor is a historical monument representative of the Fraser family’s residence, who greatly influenced the growth of Rivière-du-Loup during the 19th century. Visitors can learn more about the town’s history and gain insight into the achievements of the Fraser family in the past. They host permanent and temporary exhibitions to teach you more about the family’s importance.

 

The manor has guided tours in both English and French at a reasonable price, visiting the many rooms and decorations hinting at a time long past. Outside of the guided visits, the manor also offers a variety of activities such as a journey through the old Rivière-du-Loup, ghostly challenges and adventures helping guide the previous residents of the household, educational activities for kids, etc. Drop by Manoir Fraser to expand your knowledge of the local region and appreciate the history that shaped the town!

Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent

This museum in the heart of Rivière-du-Loup offers many exhibitions that mostly emphasize local history, contemporary art, and ethnological photography. Some of the permanent exhibits include a look at the local culture and development of the town through photographic archives, while others present First Nation artists with different artistic mediums. Additionally, the museum has virtual and temporary exhibitions.

The vision and goal of the museum are to communicate and enlighten people on the region’s vast history while supporting artists far and wide. Throughout the year, they propose many educational activities for people of all ages based on their exhibitions. Visitors can access guided tours in both English and French and purchase souvenirs at the boutique. Home Town of John McLoughlin

John McLoughlin was born under the name Jean-Baptiste in Rivière-du-Loup in October 1784. He received a license to practice medicine during his youth, pursuing a career in medicine as a physician. He is best known for his role as a superintendent in the Hudson’s Bay Company from 1824 to 1845, before becoming known as the “Father of Oregon” for his role in the development of Oregon in the United States.

He built Fort Vancouver near the Columbia River, where he supervised the trade of supplies with the First Nations. Later in his life, he resigned from his position and opened a store that was famous for being the last stop on the famous Oregon Trail. He eventually died in September 1857 after succumbing to various ailments that worsened his health. His house in Oregon City has been preserved as a historical building and has become the location of the McLoughlin House Unit of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

Église Saint-Patrice

This local Catholic Church was first constructed in 1855 on land owned by the Fraser family before being rebuilt in 1883 after a fire demolished parts of the church. The infrastructure was changed slightly but kept a lot of the neo-gothic elements of the original building. Of particular note is the steep bell tower that distinguishes the church from other establishments. Meanwhile, the church’s interior is adorned with an exquisite organ and has various statues, sculptures, and impressive paintings.

 

Since 2008, it has become a historical heritage site of great importance as it helped the town’s economic and geographic growth. It also has a lot of architectural and landscaping values, with its many eclectic elements and surrounding green spaces. Visitors can find a presbytery, convent, Sacred Heart monument, and an urban park near the church. Pastors offer many services to help fulfill the spiritual needs of community members and guests. Drop by the Saint-Patrice Church to witness part of the local heritage!

École de l’Anse

From late June to early September

This historical and authentic school is located near the shores of the Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence) River and close to the Centre d’Interprétation du Chemin du Portage. It provides historical and cultural lessons to its visitors, retracing the steps of our ancestors. The presentations and guidebooks recount the portage trails of Notre-Dame-du-Portage. It has received the Prix du Patrimoine, a heritage award for its beautiful restoration and exhibits depicting local history through photos and videos.

There are various activities for people of all ages when visiting École de l’Anse, which include playgrounds, bike rentals, geocaching treasure hunts, music and entertainment, etc. Furthermore, guests can enjoy a sunset concert every Wednesday around 7:30 pm. Take a trip to École de l’Anse to enhance your knowledge of the region’s history and participate in fun activities!

Art Académie de Rivière-du-Loup

This art gallery is home to various permanent expositions featuring prominent artists and art objects with historical value. Some products and objects on display include pottery, mosaics, jewelry, furniture, and more. Visitors can admire the works of Joane Michaud and many local artists from the region. A gift shop is on-site to purchase souvenirs, such as mosaic lamps and jewelry.

Additionally, there is an art workshop for creative lessons on various art styles. People can learn how to create traditional art, paintings, mosaics, and much more at a reasonable price. The courses and workshops are available upon request, where guests can meet Joane Michaud herself and learn about her art techniques.

Microbrasserie Aux Fous Brassant

This microbrewery is located in the heart of the downtown area of Rivière-du-Loup, offering various craft beers to its guests. Each of their beers is brewed on-site at their location and is made using local organic ingredients from Quebec. They offer five regular beers and 12 seasonal beers that change throughout the year. Furthermore, they have various snacks on their menu to be enjoyed alongside their beer selection. These food items include jerky, nuts and chips, bruschettas, and a few more.

Regarding activities and events, the microbrewery hosts many music shows and performances. Additionally, they have an exhibit of regional artists on one of their walls every two months. The Microbrasserie Aux Fous Brassant is known by locals for having a friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. Enjoy a delicious beer on the terrace and have a good time with your travelling companions!
